Well....i like your ideas but I did mine a little different. I will have to post some pics for you.

I installed my xenarc right in the 1.5 Din space. It nearly fits perfectly. My pc is sitting behind the driver side seat currently but will be moved to the trunk eventually.
Also...i have a HU and i relocated it to the cubby hole on the bottom of the console. After a few more finishing touches it will look great. Just some ideas for ya....
Will post some pics soon.

Sorry I havent checked my own thread in a while, I've been busy with school (Organic Chem II and Bio II).

Shel, that istall looks good, but I think I've decided to go with a fixed screen, largely due to this GM double din mount.

Heckle, I'm gonna try to do the no head unit option. We'll have to see how it works out. I'd love to see pics of your install. Maybe I can steal a few more ideas!

I decided to go with a BU 353/355 for the GPS dongle, largely due to this thread.

I am going to be using a similar mount made by the same member for my Impala. Let me know how it fits.

I got the BU 353 in the mail today. It works excellent. I got 9/9 sats, and I'm not in a big city or anything. It's somewhat big, but nothing major. Just kinda surprised me of the reception. (AND I was in a garage). GPS amazes me...I've never used it until tonight. You will be happy with the 353.

Thanks, guys! Here's where I'm at:

Bought:
Acer Laptop (1.3 Ghz Pentium M) - $345.01
Pac Audio SWI-X - $39.88 - steering wheel controls
BU 353 GPS dongle - $54.95 - amazing how many sats this baby picks up!
Maya EX5 - $59.95 - Dolby 5.1 surround via USB
Infinity REF96131 Speakers - $81.80 - blew my stock rear speakers, so I had to get some new ones. These are at least 5x better though.
GM Double Din 7" screen mount - $95.00 - humount.com

Left to get:
Xenarc 700TSV
Relay controllers?
Managed Power supply?

I'm as of now, I'm unsure how I'm gonna get the RCA plugs on the Maya to go to the speaker wire input of the stock Monsoon amp. I talked to a guy at Fry's who said there's no such thing as an RCA to speaker line in converter. I find that hard to believe, but we'll see how it goes.

Also, at this point I'm not sure if I even need managed power. I can wire both the screen and the laptop directly to the battery by hacking their cigarette lighter adapters. The only thing I would need less than 12V for is externally powered USB devices (right now I don't have any) and perhaps a power signal for the amp. My biggest concern right now, is getting the sound from the computer to the amp, and getting power to the amp. It's gonna require some more research, but I'm a quick learner.

I also have to figure out how to get my computer to start up with the ignition, hibernate when I open the door, and stay on for 10 mins if I don't open the door while the car is off. Those are all functions of the Monsoon amp, but I just need to figure out how they (GM) made it do that.

A good site for Grand Am owners is http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/.

I got a 2001, and yea i'd like to know how your moded the speakers in the doors to acommonadate 6 1/2... Also merc, How is the sound quality?
I'm a little relunctant to give up the HU, mostly cuase i'm not sure how the Low watt Speaker out puts form a computer would carry over to an Amp. i'm playing with the Idea of getting a new HU, mounting it in the Rear, and then mounting the face plate upfront. Maybe either A on the Visor or be in the cubby where the cup holders all are and playing with fiberglass and bondo.
so far figureing my complete project is going to hit hte $1500 for the computer layout.

i figured it out just remove stock speakers and wires and buy 1 inch mount spacers....mount the spacers then mount the speakers to the spacers.....run wires to amp and wahlah

you can find the spacers here
