2005 Jetta mk5
Hey guys. New to the forums and world of carputers. I figured what better way to start than just diving in? Ive got a "New Jetta" and the dash gives me the perfect place for a monitor and PC.
Here are some "specs":
- Some Old Gateway Mini-ITX Mobo
- Celeron 1.3 CPU
- 512ram
- Maxtor 160gb hdd
- ATI Rage 128 Pro with digital video in/out and tv tuner
- Opus 80 Watt
- Lilliput 7" Touch Screen
- Windows XP Pro
- RoadRunner or Frodoplayer (havent decided yet, though FP is confusing me the more I read )
- 1000 watt amp
Right now Im still waiting on some main components, like the PSU & Monitor... so in the meantime Ive started to take apart my dash. The Jetta mkV gives plenty of room for a mini-ITX, psu, harddrive, and monitor. So everything will be pretty concealed. I think Ill be putting the cd/dvd roms in the glove box. Heres what I have so far:
Before photo (not my car, but same setup)
Dash trim, vents, stereo, climatronic controls removed
Stereo frame removed with motherboard in place (not seated yet)
Everything put back together just to get a visual.
Ill be mounting the harddrive and PSU in their on the stereo frame, behind the monitor. The frame of the lilliput will be bonded into an aftermarket double din bezel.
More soon...!

Will you be able to hear any fan noise from the processor or will the dash muffle that noise?

Do you think it would be possible to fit an 8 inch screen in that dash?

not a chance in hell The opening is 5" vertical. I actually just ordered a 7" xenarc and Im gonna have to hack off the controls before I mold to get it to fit. The aftermarket double-din bezel I ordered makes the opening 4 1/2" or so.

Good luck with the install crsseyednsmilin - you should take a look at Drib's install in his Golf MKV - he went a similar route to what you're planning: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=35532
I am very interested in how you will mould the screen into the bezel, take lots of pics, plz
My dash is pretty much the exact same in my car - MKV Golf. I will be moving my new head unit to the top of the dash (where the cubby is). I still have to mould my screen into my bezel yet. I'm aiming to install the system after my exams in September, can't wait!

Yeah I really lucked out with a dash that screams "put a touchscreen in me!"
I just ordered a USB CD-RW/DVD drive Im going to install that in the slot for the owners manual in the glove box.

Wow! thats some fantastic fabrication work on the bezel moulding. Can you tell me what were all the materials you used for bezel?
Cheers dude.
