After a long delay (other projects, and general lack of interest), my project is progressing.
The plan is relatively simple: take a duplicate stock deck (2 din), fit a 7" TS LCD into it (recessed a bit), stick the machine in the trunk and still allow the LCD deck to be removeable.
Hardware
EPIA M10000
512MB DDR
M1-ATX (died before I can put the PC in)
OPUS 90W DC-DC
27GB WD (will get something bigger later)
SP-719 7" TS LCD
Stock Layout
Bad photo, but you can see where the stock deck is. The entire dash is angled towards the driver a bit, so viewing angle is more or less proper. The deck pulls out with two clips and slides on rails. My goal is to retain this ability with the new deck.
Issues
One major is issue is that there is no space for buttons or knobs on the deck with a 7" LCD fit in there. Having atleast buttons is a MUST. But I don't want to butcher the dash up to have this luxury. If you look to the right of the shifter in the center console (photo below), right under the passenger heated seat switch, you can see there is a blank space (unlike the left, which has the Winter/econ/sport mode selector). The plan is to drill a hole into the wood trim straight through to the bottom of the center console (there is PLENTY of space under there) and put in an ALPS rotary encoder w/ 8-way switch (ala iDrive). Cap that off with a relatively clean and small knob, and perhaps add orange LEDs under it to so that it fits with the rest of the center console's lighting.
Fabrication
Okay, so basically now that I got all my parts I started to work on the fabrication of the "deck-LCD"
Stock deck with everything other than the cage left in. You can see the little plastic clips upfront sticking out, I want those to remain in the deck.
Starting to dremel out the front plate.
Test fit. From here you can also see the rails (black) which the deck slides on into the dash. Isn't that a perfect fit?
Stock bezel cut out. Very rough cuts since I'll be bondo'ing it eitherway.
Temporary fit of the LCD's bezel under the stock bezel.
The fitment in the above photo has the LCD too far back. I am going to bring it much further out. Maybe only 3-4mm sunk in, but definitely not 8mm.
More to come as I work on it!
Oh and even though everyone has seen these (or has em), the mobo and PSU.
