Can i just point out something, Im not sure if anybody has mentioned this.
Painting the internals of the LED box white will Dramatically increase the brightness and also the diffusion of the led light. It will also ensure a consistent colour balance. As the colour white reflects the light of all the spectrum the led light will bounce around that box and create a box full of bright white light.
Make sure anything that goes in the box is also white.
As for whether to use matt or gloss white...
Gloss white will be slightly brighter, however matt white result in Significantly more diffused light.
Hope this helps.
Luke
Thanks for the comment, I know white is the most reflective colour but surely polished aluminum will have more reflection then any paint? This is the reason why I made it from ali and not painted perspex. I may play around with this though, thanks for the example.

hey biggy, lhc is right, not only will white be brighter, but anything but white will affect the display negatively, I even went so far as to wire all my led's with white wire, you don't want anything but white really in there.

Your right in saying polished aluminium is more reflective, no one is denying that. However having it all polished aluminium will just reflect the light around for ever without actually illuminating anything. The white surface will 'capture' this light and glow in effect.

yes, I understand now. Maybe perspex would have been better for this box then. Oh well.

Im almost finished the house move, but still no space or time to continue just yet. Im living on campus for 4 weeks starting this weekend and the new house is a mess. To top it off I crashed my rally car couple weeks back and now have a deadline to get that back up and running. When I get back from the college stint and clean the garage up im going to build some work benches and get my work area sorted then start back on this. The project could be on hold for up to 2 months.
In the mean time ive started a worklog thread for the tallscreen skin with the various people wanting to help build it. Ill try and focus on the software side of things while the practical side is on hold.

i do that at school with molds LOL
its a lot easier said then done though
it still wont be as thick or sturdy as fibreglass but it will be easier to alter
it will also take a while to build a mold for it

I did mini versions of thermoforming, or at least helped, when I used to make bodies for gas rc's for my uncle that raced them. The bodies would get so beat up, and it was way less expensive to make our own than to buy some, and we could try to model different cars, etc. The molds were made of plaster (which was probably not the best way to do it.)
He's since gotten rid of his thermoform table, but I think I can make one just like it at home, for probably less than $50 (I already have a good vacuum.)
The mold I'm not worried about, I am going to use thin balsa or very thin plywood (1/8") to make the mold. It holds up well under the heat, and can be fairly easy to shape. I don't have much curvature to my dash except at the lowest portion, that's going to be my difficult spot.
If I use 1/8" ABS, I think It'll be plenty sturdy, I will need to add some supports on the back side to hold up the cd deck and the dvd drive, so that will add structure, but It will be plenty.
I'll be moving soon too, and work won't progress for a bit on that, but check out my worklog when it gets going.

Admiration
BiGGy, I have to say, I admire your work and skill. My kind of attitude. Your ability to have the patience to do it right and follow through are remarkable. I have been without my workshop for over a year and plan on building anew in the spring (hopefully) then I will be tearing out projects like this and enjoy evey minute of it. I have an '04 Chevy Truck I am building a carpc for now.
I just read your entire log and I'm hooked! Can I appeal to BiGGys neighbors to help him finish moving and such so we can read on!!??

Ive been thinking about this reflection ideal and Im not totally convinced. In LHCs example its an open area for reflection so the light will naturally disperse with a mirror instead of radiate the light which is what white paint does, giving an illusion that the light source is being magnified. But in this environment the lcd panel has its own defuser to radiate the light via the panel, so im thinking in my head that all the white paint will be doing is defusing the light before it actually gets out of the box which would have a darker result. In other words you dont want the light to glow from the walls but be shot through the panel frontwards. Do you understand? Lets debate it.
