06 SI project

Figured its about time i started a worklog for my project. too late to back out now without my wife killing me for spending a bit of cash.. lol.

Pictures of the car

So far this is what ive picked up.

Hardware

From Mp3car's store(1,006.18)

1 x Lilliput 7" VGA Touchscreen 619GL-70NP
1 x VIA EPIA MII12000 Mini-ITX Mainboard
1 x 2.5" Hard Drive 60GB Samsung 5400rpm
1 x Ultra Low Profile 512MB DDR PC3200 RAM
1 x M2-ATX 160W Intelligent DC-DC PSU
1 x BU-353 Waterproof GPS Receiver
1 x Panasonic Slot Load DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo Drive 24x24x24
1 x CD Adapter: Slim Type CDROM/DVDROM/CDRW Adapter [MP3CAR-0083]
1 x IDE to Mini IDE (2.5" hard drive) cable

From Honda (100.05)

1 x left dash panel part #77250SNAA01ZA
1 x radio dash panel for si navi #77222SNAA01ZA

Software

From buyGPSnow.com (102.95)

1 x iGuidance GPS Navigation Software (Ver 2.1.3)

Already have a copy of xp for it.

the reason i bought the complete dash is so after im done fabricating, ill be sending it out somewhere to have it carbonfibered. still gotta find a place in the states that does it. and then later if i sell the car i can put stock radio dash back in it.

I will be installing this in the glovebox, ill post pics once i get started.

Left to figure out

FM Radio.
bluetooth(which dongle is best to get)
wifi(which is best to get)
Sound card(will i need one, probably)
Extra PCMCIA remote located to have the ability to use my verizon 3G card. and still have access to grab it for use in my laptop.

If i can use stock speakers and amps or if i need to change them.

update.

Im posting this from the carputer. Everything went smooth. no DOA's and windows even played nice with the via motherboard.

With some plexi I had laying around the office, I was able to fabricate a case. Putting this in the glovebox of the SI doesnt give me a whole lot of room, but it makes it more interesting. I havent made the top plate to enclose the glovebox yet, Ill get to that when i start to install everything. Ill post pics tonight when i get home. havent picked up the bluetooth adapter yet.

so far ive installed, windows, winamp, powerdvd, roadrunner.

still need a radio/tv bluetooth and wifi card.(usb) gps software will be here tomorrow.

pics of making the case and setting everything up.

when its installed in the glovebox, ill have an acrylic top so itll all be enclosed. besides the slot loader, on/off switch, usb port and possible temp gauge.

Ahhh the wonderful world of velcro. when i goto actually mount it in the car ill be able to move drives to where they need to be for the top plate.

gotta finish adding software and functionality over the next week. sometime in the next few days ill start fabrication of the dash ill post pics then.

Now that im looking at these pictures i see i really need a haircut sounds like a plan for tomorrow :P

Congrats on the Si

Hay nice car, looks like mine but a different colour, where are you putting the screen? so far there are three 06`civic carputer projects on mp3car, mine, luwe and 94legend but he dosnt have a worklog, luwe decided that the original radio was worth keeping I did not, so out it goes. as for the carputer, I'm going to try to fit it into the dash.

LUWE SYGABU

the only word of advice i can offer is VENT the glovebox well, that ***** is tight for air.

BTW how long did you have to wait for delivery?, i was at the dealer yesterday and he told me that the Si's are backordered for over a year.

scott- i work on computerized machinery for a living, if you look at the top pic, you can see what it looked like before i cut it, if i didnt have it laying around i would of made the same using acrylic and some plastic weld. i drilled the holes for the standoffs, and then i just used the standoff itself and a nut driver to thread the plastic. when i put the 2 together i drilled the same whole on one side and then a bigger hole on the outer and used some thumb screws. its pretty solid.

port- yeah im getting rid of the whole radio also, im going to order one of them HQCT's as soon as i find a place that pre-orders for the us lol. . i wanted to buy the car with the navi but alas there was no way in hell i was waiting 6 months for my SI just for a nav system. this will turn out way better anyhow. besides when people ask me why im putting a pc in my car, i love telling them.. "because i can."

94legend i beleive is actually the guy who pointed me to this site. lol. i was theorizing what i could do to this car on vtec.net and hes like here check this out.

as for fitting it in the dash. i would imagine there should be enough room in there with the radio gone. i was using the glove box so i wouldnt have to rip the dash apart to work on the pc lol. also i was thinking of actually accessing the air duct behind it and tapping into it for air conditioning in the summer.

oh as for delivery. i got lucky i walked in a dealership, the person that ordered mine couldnt get financed i bought the car pretty much right then and there. but if you know how to find the allocations out, and your not afraid to call diff dealerships. you might wait a month or 2. I posted some other crap here, then realized, ive seen your car so im editing what i said. lol.. im still waiting to see you fit that screen lol.

oh and i like luwe's setup. it looks really good. when hes done relaxing, im sure hell go back and finish the last 10% he rushed lol.. but yeah he did a really good job. i just personally dont want the stock radio, nor do i think i want the screen that far low.

Todays progress.

-took apart 7" lilliput 619....that was fun.

-cut out notches on dash to make everything flush. the monitor front doesnt fit perfectly imagine that lol.. theres a curve on the bottom. so i cut slots in the bottom up only part way. on the bottom I cut a score into the plastic so i was able to bend down the plastic. tomorrow i will hotglue everything into place. and start molding. the plan is since i bent that peice down. i should be able to build up and make it look all flat on the back with no curve were the bottom part of the monitor is.

anyhow. heres some more pics of todays progress... thank the stars for safety goggles.

good prohress, it took me for ever to get started, you know where you cut your knotches and scored the plastic, I recomend that you not bend the plastic back but rather bend it in on the sides and out on the top and the bottom. and mpve the buttons to the bottom peice right infront of the screen. i photoshoped in what i mean, not bad for like 6 hours(more like 6min.lol) this is what i was going to do untill i bought a god damm 10" and tore it to peices.lol ill make it look good, i hope.

i actually used thumb screws to hold everything together. if i needed to bond it, the two things I know that work. are epoxy(pain in the ***, takes some time to set). or plastic weld. if you goto a shop that deals with the selling of acrylic sheets, or maybe a hobbie store you should be able to find it. plastic weld is a thin liquid. when you put it on acrylic, and hold the acrylic together it actually melts and bonds the plastic together. When I owned a sign shop I used to buy mine at a place called konradi plastics. Somewhere out by portage indiana. im sure theres a place that deals in that kinda stuff out where your at. I also used to buy 4X8 sheets of acrylic, polycarbonate, etc.

Port- I thought about moving the bottons to the bottom. like it looked like on your pic. my only concern was if i would have enough room for the heater controls. I already bent the plastic slightly down and hot glued the touch front into place. im just getting ready to pickup some fiberglass and bondo etc so i can start molding. i took some pictures. ill post them when i get home. im still waiting to see that 10 inch screen in the dash. lol.. im sure youll make it fit... lol.. after kicking and pulling and scratching and crying .lol. all i gotta say is that your a braver man then I

Todays update-

Supplies

From NAPA(55.00)

Hot glue sticks-
Fiberglass cloth
Fiberglass Hardener
Fiberglass Resin Jelly
Body filler(bondo)
hardner cream(for the bondo)
Sand Paper(200,400,1000,2000 Grit)

From the Dollar Store(since theyll be trashed when there used)(15.00)

Brushes(for the fiberglass)
Applicators(for the bondo)
Rubber kitchen gloves(cause fiberglass and bondo is nasty stuff on the skin)

I mounted the touch screen face to the dash using hot glue to temerarily hold the face into place. Tomorrow I will Fiberglass around the sides(backside) for a more permanant solution. After the fiber glass sets I will fill in and square everything off with bondo. anyhow. heres pics from today.

Well today I took care of fiberglassing the lcd front to the dash. First I cut fiberglass cloth. the sides i did to length the top and bottom i cut larger to overlap. monday when i go back into work, ill trim down any fiberglass that stiicks up with the dremel, then ill begin to fill in the front with bondo. the reason im using both bondo and fiberglass, is in my experience fiber glass will give me the support i need, and the bondo will fill in what i need and is easier to sand and mold then fiberglass. best of both words. anyhow heres some pics of today, ill continue monday, saturday night is for partying, and sunday is for sleeping :P
