Yes I do have the B5 platform so my dash is a little different. I was wondering of you guys that have seen the radio pulled out, how much space is behind there? I'm wondering if there is a way to move the headunit back about 3 inches and just put the screen and bezel in front of it? I could somehow make plate that would allow the screen to slide down and forward giving access to the headunit behind it. Anyone know if this is a feesible option?

Pussing the head unit back it not gonna happen. IIRC, the HU is far back as it can be. The air duct for the AC gets in the way of everything. There is very little room back there to move around. Unless... I think you might be able to squeeze it in if you move the HU down to where about the Climate control is, but even then it'll be tight. My dvd drive barely fits there, it's touching the back.

Let me see if I can find some pics of it.

I will be taking out my stereo to look around as soon as I get my radio removal tools. I'll take some pics and measurements, but I don't know how different the dashes are. I am going to take off the glove box too and see what is going to be possible back there. You may want to check out the audi forums (audiworld, audiforums, audi-forums).

We probabley should start a new thread for this. Maybe one for A4 double din installs, or A4 installs in general. I have a friend that did an install of an LCD in his B5 A4... http://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/1734601.phtml
Check it out, probabley one of the cleanest LCD installs I've seen. He did this almost 3 years ago too, when he was like 16.

Thanks for the replies and supportive vibes...

@puff, you don't need removal tools. Just to flat strips to stick in the holes. Even a thin nail filer would work.

Found the pics. Not great pics, but they give you some idea of how much room is back there.

Lilli Bezel Mock-Up...

Here are some pics of the Lilli 629 front bezel held up near the factory stereo. The Lilli bezel is a little taller than the factory stereo, but once I get to fabricating the LCD housing it should fit ok. I also think I will loose the Lilli buttons on the front and either relocate to the ashtray area or just use the remote.

I need to do some searching on relocating the front button panel on a Lilliput 629. The remote only option may be easier. Let me know your thoughts...

Yeah, I say loose the button, you hardly ever use them. I don't have them on my screen, I don't even have the IR for the remote. If you wanna relocate them it really not that hard, just gotta extend the wires.

I thought relocating them to the flip up ashtray area would be cool, but hard to get in there. I also want to save that area for some cool upgrade, like USB ports or a multicard reader. I think I will go remote only and lose the buttons. I have a cool card holder drawer above where the LCD will be that could hold the remote

I am just waiting for the Metra kit to come in, then I will start doing the LCD fabrication. Thanks for looking and leaving a note...

Why don't you use one of these to mold in the screen and the buttons

That is what I am doing! LOL. Based on the sizing of the LCD bezel, I will need to loose the button area of the LCD altogether (see the pics of it held near my factory stereo, too tall when the doubel din bezel is factored in). I'm OK with that, I will relocate the IR sensor and use the remote. I have heard from many people that they don't use their buttons anyways. I will need to do the auto power mod for the Lilli though, but that shouldn't be tough, there are a few posts that walk you through it...

Thanks for part search and suggestion on the double din kit. Maybe you know the answer to this...

Do those clips in the pic you posted snap into something on the car? It looks like they just snap in once the bezel is pushed back in the double din opening, can you confirm that? Will it be enough to hold it all in place since the lcd will be mounted to the lcd bezel attached to the double din kit?

For all other Audi A4 (B6 platforms), that kit is the Metra 99-9102. EDIT: The kit pictured is the Schosche AU2390. They look the same to me. Keep your eyes on this thread to see how it works once I get it in the mail and fabricate the lcd bezel into it...

Been staring at the double din bezel thing for a little bit. I think I am going to try and recess the lcd a little. I like to drive with my sunroof open, but those days may be numbered thank to glare. Maybe if I have the room a little recess of the lcd will help with glare and stuff.

EDIT: Oh yeah, if I recess just right, I think I could work on my faux stereo lcd cover. Basically a piece of abs plastic with a crappy single din stereo face fabricated into it. At a glance through the window they would think it was crap. The other idea is to photograph the factory HU and make a photo cover for the LCD. That would be easier I bet and also look less suspicious...

i was about to say the same thing, you need a place with ventilation like behind the glove box or have a way to vent the glove box, not just the computer

My glove box is connected to my AC i think. I am planning on making an aluminum mount for the Pandora to raise it a little so the intake vents have room. Also, I will need to cut out a large portion of the back of the glove box out to make room for the PC, so maybe I should make that opening as big as possible to allow air from the back export vent to escape. Any other ideas how to keep it cool in the glove box?
