The dash kit was a great choice for me because i already had a double din HU. For the B5 platforms it seems hacking the dash is the best way. There are a few B5ers that have done this, some with optical drives under the LCD, and some with just the LCD. It doesn't seem like enough room back there for the whole PC, especially when you and in a USB hub, cords, etc. What is the glove box like on the B5 platform? I know the B6 platform has enough room for my Pandora plus other crap. You could fit the PC behind the LCD, but it will be tight, and maybe too hot unless you can get some air flowng through it.
Start a worklog, I find it very useful to keep my thoughts organized and have a place for people to comment/criticize and suggest ideas for my install...
P.S. LOL on the MAF. Let me guess... window clips broke, glove box broke, and center console clip broke on the VR6? At least those German's are consistant, same **** breaks on everyone's VWs...

woah, way too much bondo!!!!
From my experience I've learned that if you work with thinner layers it's easier to sand and it fills up the smallers holes better. Its also smooths down faster. I did it exaclty like you the first time. You gonna have to sand down alot right now and then reapply again to get it better.
Also after you applied the bondo to the frame, as it is hardening shape it with your fingers. That way you don't have too many bumps and its smoother. This also removes any extra chuncks that is not necessary.
But other then that it looks good.

Thanks for the tips. I figured it was way too much, but I can always sand it down with my dremel and try again. Tomorrow, round 2!
Do you do a real thin layer, then sand, then do it again, like that?

Looking good. I should be picking up a B6 A4 in the next month or two so it's good to see someone else from SoCal doing the same thing I want to do. Plan on finishing before the June 24 HB meet? I'd love to see it in person.

dude, I hate to even tell you this, & I don't mean this negatively or anything, but you made a real mess there
at this point you may want to consider filling in the "step" completely & tappering it down to the screen opening, but it looks like you kinda destroyed the clean edge to the lcd anyway.... you have to clean that up big time... if you were close to my shop I'd say bring it by, but your a little far from me for that...
also, I noticed you said somewhere in this thread that your not going to smoke anymore in the car when the pc goes in.... with your username?... THIS I gotta see

Yeah, my first time with bondo... I have a lot to learn! LOL. I will be sanding off almost all that bondo tonight and trying again. Thanks to all that have given tips. I want to keep it recessed a little, so I will try and make a nice taper. Way too much bondo, but I am learning...
Round 2 of me vs. bondo... tonight @ 7pm. Check your local listings for time and channel...
@Turbocad6 - I will not be smoking cigs anymore in my car. I never smoke anything else in the car anyways, that is what my apartment is for Rest assured, the monicker of Puffanug lives on... and always will...

@AllenAK - I won't have it installed by June 24th, but me and my pieces will show up at the meet. If I can drum up some cash before then, I might be able to get it somewhat working. I am looking forward to the June 24th meet.
The main reason I will not have it done by then is I am trying to figure out what I need to do to power my speakers since the facotry HU is going bye-bye. I am hitting up car audio and audi forums today to see what my options are. I think I need 1 or 2 amps, maybe some crossovers, etc. It will be the big stepping stone for my install at this point.

I was only half serious that you'd have it done by June 24 When you figure out the speaker / amp situation, I'm interested in what you're gonna do about that. Also, did you plan on running FM/AM radio or some form of Sat radio? Or is it just MP3s?
Edit: Just re-read first post...saw you're going XM. So you're eliminating FM/AM altogether, right?

this vehicle has a climate controlled glovebox, I would not see a need to drill any holes.

I am sorting out the audio part as we speak (type). I found a user on the audiworld forums that has a good write up on replacing the factory stereo with an aftermarket in his 2003 A4 avant. Looks like I need 1 4-channel amp at the minimum. I'll have all the details of the audio in my worklog as I move forward. I will not be using AM or FM for now, and XM will come later. For now, stage 1 is just mp3 and cd for music.
@Paul H - It is the symphony double din radio. It has a 6 disc in-dash changer.

Update:
Here is the diagram for my system. I'm going to add it to the OP too. I know the audio stuff needs to be figured out still, but how does the rest look?
EDIT: This diagram gets updated as I figure stuff out...

How are you powering that amp?
Don't forget the fuses.
Still looking good.
