pancakeboy: the aluminium piece is a Xenarc 8" standard piece, it's usually a rectangle and I cut it to size, so the screen screws into the back of it and all of the holes line up perfectly and look good, it's a really nice solution in that regard. The shifter came with the car, I don't know the brand but have seen them for sale around.
I plugged in a freind's laptop and it seemed to work ok with the USB extension cable! I'm getting the irrits with the laptop I'm using as a test PC for a number of reasons so I think I'm just going to buy a proper, new computer, and that way I can rule that out as the source of any problems.
