Very glad to hear it. THANK YOU for spending the time to give us an update. Very few people do that. Most come here to ask questions, and don't post their experiences.
That said, I just purchased an AYAY as well, and I'm working on getting a test setup on my laptop. After I get that dialled in, I'll start working on a CarPC. Only issue I'm having right now is that the GPS sometimes is not found after resuming from hibernate. I think there are posts out here that can help me with that. Other than that, I'd say the AYAY is a pretty solid unit!

here are some random pictures while my project progresses. im working on my screen fabrication, and over all layout in the car. Ive yet to get handsfree phone working yet, but ill let rr moblie continue to mature a little while. ive yet to decide on a skin yet. i really like liquid_smokes fantastic and original skins, but they are hard to navigate to me. nothing else seems at home in my car. i like snootchs bmv2 skin, but it just seems kinda outdated. i guess ill make that decision once i have an up and running system. the pictures of the screen are of it literally just set in place. I am going to have to lengthen the wires for the screen to the controller board, because of the way the cable for the vga and touch screen control, not to mention power wire comes out of it. once i lengthen the wires, i can lay it flat to allow the wires to plug straight into the board, the way that most stock radios plug in, straight into the back. the screen is an eonon off ebay. pretty cheap, and good quality. shipped from hong kong in record time. even though its not listed, it has an auto on feature. resolution is good, and brightness is fair, although i havent had a chance to check it in real sunlight yet.

heres some pics of making my bezel. first i filled the gaps on the sides between the factory radio bezel and the touchscreen case. heres a tip for anyone using flexible bumper repair epoxy to work on their own bezels. go slow and put it on in layers allowing each layer to dry fully before putting more on. also, heating it wil not make it cure faster (trust me) but it will make it crack and take alot of hard work to fix, if ytou can without starting all over again.
epoxy

epoxy

epoxy

glazing putty and sand

more sand

backside of bezel

some primer to help find imperfections (works great) and more putty

sanding

ill let you guess

more primer and putty

4th layer of primer

matte black, no clear

matte black, no clear
look for some pics of textured clear to follow...

certainly not flawless, but on my budget of limited time, money and skills, it will certainly do for now.

Slapped it together tonight and took it for a test ride. I still have to do some work to the bezel. The inner portion where the screen attaches is not really square so it tweaks the screen slightly when screwed into place. this causes the touchscreen not to work properly. I did get ig3 umpc loaded up and working finally. it worked well during my test drive. also, i found an area under the dash where the radio can be relocated to without having to extend the wires! i was fretting all the cutting and splicing i was in for to relocate it somewhere else... i still have to extend the power wires to the screen, and find a way to secure it so that everything will fit and be secure. Ill also have trim some small portions of the dash that are covered by the bezel so the the ribbon cable for the touchscreen doesnt get pinched once installed. not a big deal really, about a days worth of work but with the holidays coming really fast it will have to wait until jan.

I got an I/O magic usb dvd/cd burner for christmas. its this model, just looks a little different, but same size.
it works well, but is powered via a wall plug, so im figuring out how i want to power it. it runs off 5v and draws approx 1.7 amps. ill show pics and whatnot of it when i decide how to properly power it. im thinking off the systems 5 volt rail, but im not that familiar with the power supply of pcs so im researching it for now.

On the PS you have the yellow 12v , red 5v and 2 black grounds. You should be able to cut the brick off the end of the power cable and determine which wire is the pos and which is the negative.
Post up a pic of the brick specs and the power cable plug just to make sure. It should be pretty simple.

I figured i would cut the wires mid way, then add some blade connectors. that way, if i ever want to take it out and use it on another pc, i wont have to rip my dash etc apart to do it. Ill post some pics up this weekend when i get my digital camera back.

Had another successful jaunt with the ig3 and ayaysir gps reciever. once again to atlanta, but then followed by a run to Savannah and then all the way back here to auburn. It did have a hickup where it lost audio but restarting the program fixed it.

yea, it does look cut off at the top. Maybe the screen size needs to be manually adjusted or the resolution is off a little. I'm thinking it should be 800x480.
