I could care less about that, I just hate to screw with people as I would hate for someone to screw with me... just not my style I guess, although pretty tempting I guess

Wow, pretty cool device. It actually seems better than making a PC do all that. I know a few folks were trying to get all that control from a PC, but this just seems better.
Red, can you PM the price your friend wants?
Are you going to switch over to one as well?

wow, those laptops that fujitsu sells on ebay look great. I might sell my laptop that I use at school, and pick up a tablet for all my notetaking and other uses. Would make a nice carputer also. Just gotta decide which screen size I want... 8.9, 10.4, 12.1, or 14.1 hmmmm decisions, decisions...
Also, this car looks like it will turn out amazing. Good luck with it (but knowing already what your capable of doing after reading all your worklogs on the montana and other threads, I doubt you'll need any luck at all) Last thing, how do you know the cpu speeds listed in fujitsu's auctions? I havent seen one listed yet?

nope - I won't be making the switch. I thought about it initially, over two years ago instead of the Alpine, but since finding somewhere to put it was a concern, we didn't go with it.
I'm still interested in making the PC do it all.
I'll send you the price.

well, I got this thing & I gotta say that I am pretty ****ed off!
I'm ****ed off that I didn't know about this unit years ago
see now, if I was in red's shoes I'd probably make the same decision....
in competition it's important to have notoriety... faced with the choice of being a pioneer in the PC car audio field, or going with something that's already been done, I guess I fully understand & support her decision,
I don't compete with anyone but myself, & even so, part of me also wants to pursue the PC route also... although I know that part of this has just got to be hard to resist also I couldn't resist maybe my next build will be pc... but part of me also wants one of these things in any car I build too, so I guess well see how this goes
now about the size & fitting this.....
see, I guess I'm weird... when I look at a component I almost ignore the form factor it happens to be currently packaged in.... when I did my alpine touchscreen & saw the head unit, it didn't bother me too much that it happened to be configured as a motorized flip out... I mean I wouldn't use it in that configuration in my car, but changing that is really a minor obsticle... it's still the hardware & the screen, all I need, just chop it up
well, this thing is the same to me, just because it happens to be a 19" rack unit, doesn't mean it has to stay that way... I have got this & took it apart & it can be made smaller ... the screen & the controls can be remote mounted ....
more details & pictures later.....

heheheh Where's the mad scientist smilie when you need it? (that will have to do)
I'm with RED on the PC route. I wanted the PC route 3 years ago. Now its possible. I just got my power supply today for the new PC. Now allI need is some cables and a temporary mounting location.
Still... that thing is totally cool. That's how excited I am for you, even though i'm not a girl.

See, that's the thing. I truely enjoy this stuff. Competing just gives me a venue to keep pushing myself. You know, if I never competed, I'd probably have been fine with my 4 - 12" subs and USAmp US2000 and my Eclipse seperates.
Now that I've experienced the sweet sweet sound...it's like a drug...competing, meeting people, the friends, the job I know have...it all pays off for me...

I'm very interested in the pictures.
There's only so many things you can shove in a car and keep it driveable. Just finding room for 3 amps, a 15" sub, a computer, distribution for the amps, and distribution for all of the smaller necessities, as well as the alpine brain and display (for now)...well, there's only so much one can do.
Now in about 2 years, I think we'll be getting rid of the back seat...so it's on!
I'm really looking forward to your review of hte DBX and to the pics of it taken apart.

I can't do pictures till later, but I took this apart.... it's constructed in a way that lends real easily to dissecting it & altering it... there is no one board that's the whole size of the unit, actually there are several boards & the 2 main boards are side by side, meaning this thing can be made to be half it's size.... bad news is the split is not on the 19" plane.... this thing has a footprint of 19"X12" or so... the largest board inside is about the full 19", but it's only around 6" deep.... if the guts were removed & folded over onto itself, the whole enclosure would be 19"X6"... & theres a bit of wasted space, so in the end I don't think it would be much taller than the original 3 1/2", so were talking a box that's 19"X6"X maybe 4" or so..... these are not from actual ruler measurements, but just from knowing the advertised overall size of the unit & seeing the guts.... should be approximately correct, or may be a little smaller, I'm not sure where that 19" is taken from.... if it's the total width of the face then the board is more like 17", the rack mount ears add maybe 2"...
anyway, the really cool thing is that all the boards are connected to each other with standard ribbon wire... like the stuff used for average ide drives in a desktop..... even the 2 face modules are easy to separate & extend.... this thing is very mod friendly.... I think on most cars I could be able to disassemble this thing & embed it inside the dashboard... I haven't done any tests yet to see how much distance can be achieved from main board to display or control, but I'm guessing a few feet should be no problem, especially on the control panel/ switch/ led part....
I'm picturing the controls built in under a sleek cover that opens to reveal them maybe.... I'm picturing the display remote mounted else ware, maybe overhead? the possibilities are really cool with this piece.... this display is just too pretty to be buried in the trunk if I can help it.... I've got a lot of ideas with this, but need to do more playing before I decide on the final layout...
this thing can be made to be small enough to bury in most qtr panels, this thing is so cool, it can easily be mounted in a box without the display or controls, just a simple box with all i/o's on one side.... it can also be even separated into several smaller enclosures to take advantage of space available... for example theres no reason the power supply needs to be inside the enlosure... it also looks like it could be easy to separate the output board into a separate much smaller enclosure, so you wouldn't even need to get at the 19"X6" main box once it's installed........
a lot of possibilities & benefits with this thing for sure, I'll get some pictures up later when I'm not driving

haha, so I wouldn't doubt that you ripped it open on your way driving home.
So you could basically jam the main baord wherever you need to, runt he DC-DC power supply somewhere else, and mount the display up front. Sounds cool.

When I read this an image flashed into mind of a seemingly permanently mounted 10" screen that with some hidden switch rotates up into the dash to reveal the processors screen above the processors switches/buttons ala double din nav/dvd.

yeah,I think competition teached me 2 things, how good it can actually get, & that it is never as good as it can absolutely be
like a drug? yeap, but much worse even, cause you've got no good reason to tell yourself you gotta stop, & your friends & family won't be throwin no interventions or signing you up for rehab, so you could "suffer" for years & years

better in a lot of ways, but also kinda different, all on the pc does also have it's benifits too, this might be a bit extreme for some, if not most

I think most were listed, like which one doesn't have it? link?

you think that's funny, as I'm picking this thing up from the guy in his garage he's explaining to me all about using it & all I kept thinking is I just wanted to borrow a philips
on the way back I kept thinking about opening it
I don't have any closeups of anything cause I was really late & in a rush, but I did check it out & snap a few shots before I put it away....
I wasn't to anxious for the display really initially cause I figured it's just a boring one color screen, but it really is a beautiful display after seeing it in action, it'd be a shame for it to be hidden away permanently... the controls are pretty nice too....
the one board I didn't label on the upper right is the inverter for the backlight & the video screen driver board...VVVV

yo, the wheels are turning at full speed & the smoke has been pouring out of my ears since I seen these guts... I've already been thinking tons of sick stuff... gotta control myself though, or it'll take forever to finish this one too
