I still say the less wires where possible the better. Why not utilize bluetooth connectivity for controlling the phone from the display. I believe I came accross a mod on ppckitchen or ppcgeeks for tv out on your HTC. I also saw it for my phone which is an HTC Vogue. Would require some software hacks but not dramatic.
maybe all that is really needed is someone with some programming skills to write drivers for an input device via USB on the Touch Pro, and grab an Xenarc X7000, and you have a decent and cheap little car pc
i just purchased a verizon samsung omnia I910 and have been looking at doing this as well, the omnia already comes with a 3 way dongle for adding multiple peripherals at once and supports TV out via composite cables, XDA developers seem to be the best source for getting this to work and from my research it seems like its been done before.
getting this to work along with my unichip flux software would be greathttp://www.unichip.us/flux_power_display.asp
PLX devices also has some good OBDII phone software but for iphone and ipod touch you can find here

I have started to decide on abandoning my HTC WM device for the Samsung Omnia. It has FM radio, tv-out, accelerometer (like the iphone), as well as other common windows mobile features.

I have not abandoned my eeepc carpc project, but I am planning on using the omnia as a backup carpc solution or for additional computing functions.
Great thread!!! I was wondering if anyone had plans to try this on an HTC XV6700? I know its an old phone but my other phone was water damaged when I pulled a girl out of a pool.
I am wondering if the cable will work with my phone as I haven't at all researched the advantage. Anyone that could offer insight would be my hero for the next few minutes :)
Does all the omnia does!
Has Fm
Has Acceleromoter! etc
Essentially, Helio makers of the redfly are going out of business because their product is pretty lame. However, they do have software that enables you to control your phone much like Mobiler - but much faster- and the screen resolutions are bigger.

right now it's in beta mode for 21 days. Give it a shot!
It's a windows mobile device so it has the full windows mobile suite: IMAP mail, web browser (IE and opera), GPS, Windows Media player, word, excel...blah blah..
The thing is that the Omnia has a better interface than the normal Windows Mobile device. Imma give it a whirl and see how I like it. The Touch Pro looks too ugly and I dislike the external/slide keyboard. I prefer everything touchscreen...less hardware and bulk.
