Car PC AntiVirus
I ran ZoneAlarm Security Suite for a year and I found it to be quite "heavy" or resource intensive. I was wondering what alternative are there for Security Suites or just Anti Virus that are "light" with low over head and use little resources. Just some simple security with an auto update that does not bog crap down. A firewall would be nice too.
Thanks in advance!

I hate AVG with a passion.
But to the question, the level of security is very directly related to how much it slows your computer down. The more it checks, the slower it is. The less it checks, the faster. And most can be configured to be specific to a car environment. Maybe only scan removeable drives (friend's infected thumb drive), or only scan when internet is active. Other than that, a CarPC is a closed system. Do your scanning of updates and music remotely on a fast desktop, and it is ready to transfer infection free.
And viruses and crap come from bad websites and idiots who open emails from strangers. In the CarPC, you rarely venture from your safe known sites when web browsing, and if you dont even have an internet connection, who cares if you have a bagillion viruses... Who are they going to report to when their link is severed?!

i hate AVG too but anyways...
how could i set up an AV to "work" only when im connected to the net?
I use the internet constantly in my car, so a good firewall is a must, but I would at least like some kind of AV. What about Avast? or I can get McAfee for free through comcast but I heard its a resource hog. :suspicious:
-
Mcafee is the biggest resource hog I have seen (Other than Norton, dont even get me started :D)
I didnt realize you had internet in all the time, so that changes things. Do you browse, or just email, weather, known sites?
-
Mcafee sucks almost as bad as Symantec.
I know that Toaster doesn't like AVG, but its never done me wrong. I know his issue with it, and it's pretty specific.
I run it in my truck and it never interferes with anything, except when I go online for something and it updates itself. :p

Meh, Avg works fine enough. It's what i use.
If you don't want it to autostart, just disable it or "msconfig" it out of startup and run it when you want it....

OK, at work we use RAS and RDP as a verb.
But I've never seen MSCONFIG used as a verb!
w00t! (it's the word of the year, you know)

im runninig a demo of ESET smart security at home and it uses hardly any resources and its a suite. they make Nod32. I go to known sites, use gmail, and update everything, my wifi adapter is set to hop so when I find an open one, it jumps on. Then there are my firends, the colleges, and home. I have a decent machine though, the EPIA 1300-SP w/512MB DDR 800 but I use Centrafuse and GPS constantly so I woul dlike resources available. I would like to get this ESET one for all my PCs but its kinda pricey up front, any one know if there is a student discount on this at all? the suite though, not just Nod32. Its called ESET Smart Security and its fast!
Thanks!

Used nod32 for years both on my own machines and clients, quickest AV of them all but I don't bother on the CarPC with anything.
