Image HD and load to CF

I have created an XP Home image using NLite and setting up ewf and everything I need on an NTFS 80GB IDE HD (using 1.2GB). I have a VIA EPIA EX 15000G motherboard with 1GB of RAM and a CF to IDE adapter installed on it. My question/problem is how do I get the image off of my IDE drive and onto my CF drive.

I formatted my CF drive in Vista as NTFS. I have plugged the IDE drive into my Vista PC as a slave and tried copying all of the files over to the CF drive. That didn't work. I've read a ton of guides on this and I feel like I'm missing something obvious. I have purchased Norton Ghost for my Vista PC, but not sure how deploy the image to the CF drive using that.

I tried searching, but a lot of the threads that came up had hundred and hundreds of replies and I didn't see what I was looking for when skimming through. Thanks for the help!!

I have used WinImage seams to work fine for the smaller images
but I have use it for larger ones, I have also used FlashBoot, its a little
more flexible tad bit less reliable, Also WinDD or DD in Linux, there
command line tools, You could also try Selfimage

WinImage has worked the best for me, quick and easy, but it does not always
work, sometimes I have to use WinDD or DD

Another tool that might be fun to play with is UNetbootin, but its for
putting Linux images/iso on flash drives

I just hope one of them works in Vista

    Good Luck

using a PE disc (WinPE or BartPE) with imagex is the easiest way for me. I have a dedicated WinPE thumbdrive that I've used hundreds of times for these types of things.

I wonder if he could also just copy the files over and then use
BootPrep to make it bootable like you would on XP Embedded

yes, he can. in fact that's how i recommend doing it in my EWF guide. when I wrote the guide there was no imagex, so xcopy was the easiest.

Well I purchased Paragon Partition Manager which imaged my HD to my CF card, but CF card still won't boot, just runs through bios, goes to Verifying DMI Pool Data... and then nothing. HD activity light is solid though. Not sure what's going on?

You think even though I imaged from one HD to another that i need to use bootprep still? Is there a better way to troubleshoot why it's not booting? Thanks again.

    UPDATE

I have tried both the older style ATA cables and newer style, I have tried on both the master and slave portions of the cable and have also edited the BIOS to try CHS, LBA and Large, all with NO success.

Also my CF card is a SanDisk Extreme III 4GB card and it is detected properly in the BIOS. This is the CF to IDE adapter I have http://www.casetronic.com/product_d.php?id=0000000044

I've used DD in Linux for years to do this. It doesn't matter what the drive is, it just makes an image and you can save it or write directly to the CF card.

I've had some problems with Ghost-ing from one drive to another, with Vista as the booting OS. XP, never a problem, but Vista needs to do a quick automatic repair (after booting from the CD, of course) in around 90% of the computers which I migrate, upgrade, or replace the HDD, and salvage the data with Ghost.

Also, best fix might be to make a .gho image, not a d2d clone whenever this bootup occurs.

Ok finally got XP running on my CF, but it takes and no exaggeration here, probably over an hour to boot up. Speeds are fine when it is running, but my goodness it is ridiculously slow on boot up.

    Any ideas?

what CF card and CF-IDE adapter are you using? have you considered using an SSD instead? much better performance and usability for the price.
