But I noticed that when I came back to the System32 directory, after going to where I had minlogin stored to copy it, winlogon.exe, which had been deleted, was back. I found a place online that showed me how to disable Windows File Protection, I tested it out and it worked. Then I continued with the minlogon instructions. I checked to make sure and it was 17KBs. I imported the registry key after deleting everything. Once I finished all that I rebooted and the classic login screen popped up. I tried logging in with my user name (no password) and it the screen would go away and just have a blue background, it would wait a few seconds, then the login screen would pop back up. After that I tried using my Administrator account and password, this produced a bit different results. The login screen disappeared, I got the blue background again, but this time the Windows login sound played (which I previously had disabled), but about 2 seconds after it finished, the shutdown song played and the login screen popped backup. Anybody have any ideas?
Exactly what i got. I think that guy left an instruction out, beause i swear i followed what he said.

I tried replacing winlogon.ex_ in the i386 folder
Wouldn't you also need all the registry entries? Is there a way to customize the registry with nLite preinstall?

Well it works for me. I did nothing else but what SFiorito instructed us to do.

Same here. I followed the instructions and it worked well. I had windows file protection disable right from the install though. It's an option in nLite.

I got that restart problem. It's because the winlogon file didnt copy properly (WFP or whatever)
I booted in recovery console and copied the file over winlogon again.
    Then it works fine.

I used SP1. I forgot to mention it in my earlier post, but i also added the reg values.. To add this into an nlite'd version, you have to follow these steps:
By the way, this is done BEFORE building the image with nlite..

    1. Create a new folder called " $OEM$ " in the root folder of your nlite project (same folder as i386)
    2. Create a new file inside "$OEM$", and name it cmdlines.txt .
    3. Copy the filed called" winlogon.reg " into the $OEM$ folder.

    Content of cmdlines.txt :

    [COMMANDS]
    "REGEDIT /S winlogon.reg"

    That's it!

Also, if you want some files copyed to the root of C:\, follow these steps:

    1. Create a sub-folder in "$OEM$", called " $1 " .. All files/folders in here will be copied to C:\ during installation.. This will come in handy for EWF!

To copy files into windows/system32/etc. folder:

    1. Create a sub-folder in "$OEM$", called " $$ " .. All files/folders in here will be copied to C:\windows.. To copy files into system32 folder, simply create another folder in "$$", called system32..

Sorry for the long and messy post!

Good job FetLyd, that's a great tip! As far as those of you having problems with WFP and copying minlogon: I don't know what to tell you. Every machine I've tried (including a default SP2 install) I got a warning dialog from WFP which I was able to cancel. It looks like most other people got the same thing as well. The problem is that the file and registry entries go hand-in-hand, so if one is screwed up the whole logon process gets screwed up!
