For a quick guide to update the Bootscreens using NTOSKERNEL.EXE use:

Why go through 11 steps, when you can do two? Add two switches to the boot.ini file, reboot. Done. Does the other method have more funcionality or something?

The boot.ini file in the root dir applies to NT, 2K, XP, and 2k3 Server also. It's hidden and read-only by default. Either remove the hidden attribute or make sure your explorer is configured to show hidden files. Remove the read-only attribute and edit with your favorite text editor.

To see the boot.ini file in XP you need to un-tick 'Hide protected operating system files' in the folder - view options.

Do not open it with winzip. Rename it to boot.bmp
