I beleive you have to use something in addition to what's been accomplished here. Google for El Torito.
The main difference is CD's don't use Fat32 or NTFS.

This is pretty great guys!!! Now I feel like giving it a shot. I do see why you guys are cutting down the size of the OS, but I never had an issue with hibernating the carputer. I'm running GPS, XM, USB RF keyboard, Win XP Pro sp1, usb wireless g network adapter, 7" touch screen, Epia M10000, 256 DDR RAM, Media Engine and Frodo player, and click and type on screen keyboard. The carputer is set to hibernate when the car is shut off and kills the power to everything . My boot time coming back from hibernating is less then 20 seconds. Granted my HD could die one day from the cold, I have all my songs and files backed up on my laptop. I should make a image file of the HD and store it on a disc come to think of it.

Once the install is below 700M, is it possible to write a bootable image to CD and boot from CD? --I'm hoping to do a 'live' cd install like Knoppix --if you're familiar w/ it.
You might want to look at BART PE, made by the same guy who updates the eltorito.sys generic CD-ROM driver. He just released 3.1.3 of BART PE.

*edit - I suppose I should actually PUT the link up... I'm an idiot...

Why can't you try something like WinXP Lite ? It says XP can be placed on 350Mb. I'm pretty much sure it can be even smaller.
