Thread: CF card procedures?

I doubt it could be because of this but.. ..
SFiorito is using the SanDisk CF Card which is a bit slower and Knubile is using the Lexar 80x CFC.

Is there a speed limit on the IDE adapter for reading / writing to the CF`s?

I`ve ordered my Lexar CFC, so will try that see if I get the same problem as you guys when it comes.

Also are there any IDE differences between a laptop and desktop system?
I havent purchases the IDE adapter but will probably go ahead and get the acscontrol.

Actually, the SanDisk is faster: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/mul...?cid=6007-6133 I'm thinking it's either a DMA issue or the files are getting corrupted somehow on transfer.

*Knubile*: Sorry I ask again, but you're sure you're using the right IDE cable? Because that's the same type of behaviour I was seeing when I was having problems. You said you were able to boot to DOS at least, right? Another thing you could do is check and make sure all your files actually did make it over. Is the used space the same on the CF as the HDD?

Yes, it boots into dos. It even boots the first part of windows XP. I can select safe mode if I want. I dies at some point during the load process.
I'm going to try the whole procedure for the CF card again from scratch right now.

Are you using a Via Eden SFiorito? What settings are you using in the bios for the CF card? Mine is all set on auto. auto detect, auto access mode, and auto Ultra DMA.

I've got a VIA MII. Everything auto. I tried doing a search for the Lexar, but I couldn't find whether it supported DMA or not. Try disabling DMA and see what happens.

k. I disabled DMA. Ghosted the OS from the laptop drive to the CF card. The first attempt at booting the CF card, it reboots after a few seconds after the post.
This time around, I get the windows failed to start menu. I select safe mode so I can see what's going on. I see drivers loading. The last one I see is btkrl.sys. That's the bluetooth driver. It resets or freezes at this same point everytime.
What could it be with this one driver? Or is btkrl.sys successfully loaded when it shows me the name, making it the next driver that's the problem?
This is soooo frustrating.
Do you think the fact that I can get this far in the boot up process must mean its not the CF card itself or the adapter?

Only way to test is without the bt adapter unfrotunately. Does it still load the driver if you unplug the adapter? If so, I guess you have to uninstall the adapter on the HDD then redeploy to CF.

Okay. So I got really ****ed off at this whole thing and decided to do a regular nlited windows install on the CF card to see if I could boot that.
After the cd loads all the drivers, it says examining drive blah blah blah.. Then freezes. Does it every time. Looks like there's possible something wrong with the adapter maybe? I went into acronis true image. It froze analying the CF card as well. Ghost and partition magic have no problem looking at it. 98 boot disk, no prob either.
Wonder what it could be?
