Thread: Ultimate Optimization

I'm not going to gripe. I just prefer using XP because I know that better and it has everything I need. I've got much more experience programming in Windows than I have in Linux. I was thinking of looking into a Linux install, but then I decide to investigate more into XPe so now I finally have exactly what I need.

Iknow windows and linux about the same i know how to configure everything i need in linux for a complete car multimedia system... all i really need is an interface to make everything look cool and then im ready to put it in my truck...

I guess i either have to learn how to make my own interface or i will have to pay for XPe... but free is soo good!

Yea the thing with that is i'd have to format my cf card and install xcar cause its a complete OS (linux) that would more than likely slow down my boot time...

Well, you're going to have to accept that unless all you want is a command prompt your boot times will have to suffer eventually... take a look at the posts on this forum. When I said I investigated XPe I meant I figured out how to make XPe components work on regular XP installs. So with a properly configured XP and the mods I talk about you can make an install that will fit on a 512MB card and boot fairly quickly and be fully functional. I'm still working on the software side of my system, but it's currently running off a CF card running XP SP2 and I can choose any of the existing front ends out now or make my own.

I love Linux, and I would love to have it in my car. The thing is, though, people around here almost exclusively develop for Windows. Yeah, I could get a decent front-end for Linux, but what about all the neat plugins and other little programs? Also, the GPS programs for Linux pretty much suck. I guess if I get ****ed enough at Windows, I might end up trying Linux in the car, but for right now, I'm sticking to Windows.

I am a linux finatic. I built my HTPC with linux using alot of the same hardware as I'm using in the car. The problem is that there is no viable frontend for linux. HeadUnit looked promising for about a month but it appears that the developer has given up on it. There are some people using XMMS as their frontend, but this solution just did not appeal to me. I had to go to XP.

I am still working on my own linux frontend that should be atleast somewhat useable as a music player in a couple weeks. The way I am approacing it, however (os independance), may not work, so it might just be for linux as of right now. I do feel that I am reinventing the wheel, but when I am done, that wheel will have giovanna rims with pirelli p0's on it

i'll make an announcement probably in january when its at a decent stage in development and put out the code/binary for it (uses sdl, sdl_image, sdl_mixer and libxml2, so factor those into your system also)

so keep an eye out for ``phoenix''

40 MB? Including X? Wow. Dahswers (http://www.dashwerks.com/) also has some free software you might want to check out. You might not stay at 40MB once all the dependencies are met though.

BTW, I was going to start with linux(gentoo), but XP fit my needs better.
