    SF:

    That's the problem, for me. my drives arent detected when coming back from hibernation, and besides, i'd like an instant detection anyway. i want the music to auto-play when it comes back, which it cant do if it has to be detected every time. i think this'll help with that, and since there's no caching or anything going on, i think it'll be safe.

    just in case, i'm using a spare usb external hd i have laying around, with a copy of all my music\movies, installed on a spare hd. so, nothing can really get messed up. if this works, it'll save alot of hassle i think, and make horm more friendly for everyone to use. i'll let ya know.

    well, no go

    seems there's nothing i can do to get horm working in this config. even with the drive set as removable, soon as i access the drive after a HORM resume, it disconnects and is unusable till i physically unplug/replug the drive back in.

    hitting a brick wall here... any ideas?

    do you mind running through the steps you take to set your HORM point?

    i've tried everything...

    got everything the way i want it (ewf off), ewfmgr -enable and reboot, leave the drive plugged in and hibernate - on resume, music plays for 1 sec then rr freezes and the drives dissapear till i un\re plug

    unplug the drive and hibernate - windows doesnt detect the drive at all on resume. have to un\re plug to detect it.

    i've tried all that with safely remove hardware too, and no go.

    well, i've finally gotten somewhere
    though, keep in mind, this is still a testing setup. hence the compliacted..ness.

    i'm sure i can reduce this setup to 2 drives somehow, but here's how it works so far.

    caching is disabled on ALL drives (and ide channels).

    windows on c: <-- hd, will be cf
    mp3s on d: <-- hd
    programs (rr and winamp) on e: <-- pen drive

    when i hibernate or standby, everything resumes perfectly. it continues playing the current song and playlist, no matter what was playing when the hibernation point was set.

    the only snag is when i cut power. i have no idea why. if i shutdown completely and boot (resume from hibernate) rr and explorer freeze till i unplug the pendrive. same happens if i standby then cut power, it resumes from hibernation exactly the same way. looks good, but wont work till i replug the pen drive.

    this setup is perfect for me, if i could figure out the difference btw a restart and a shutdown.

    any ideas?

    found this thread by accident looking at booting from CF, I can see the point that the size of the card needs to be (install size)+(hibernate size) and then HORM etc.

    But........If I set up the install with just 1 stick of ram, create my hibernate file and get it all working etc then add my 2nd stick of ram back in, it should all still work fine.....

    Anyone tried that? would save on space if it does work and I cant see a reason for it not to work, and if it does, what about creating the hibernate file with just the minimum amount of ram installed?

    No ideas, but my home PC does the same thing if I have my external hard drive or ipod plugged in while booting. Try changing the primary boot device to nothing, it's probably set to hard drive right now. Was anything plugged in when you installed the OS, besides the CF card, i.e. pen drive?

    @silentbob:

    i should've been more clear. the pc boots fine, but windows freezes till i unplug the drive

    @lez

    google maxmem= and boot.ini. you can set a specific number for ram that windows can use. might be useful for trimming down a few megs

    @TheUni:

    I have the same problem with windows freezing until I unplug an external drive. To be more correct, windows freezes until I unplug MOST external drives - I have one external hard drive that does not cause windows to freeze until it is removed.

    What motherboard are you using? I have a hunch that this problem may be MB specific...
