    so have a fresh formatted drive and install XPe to disk then I get the 3 files I need to modify a different nlited XP install? When i try to run disk one in a normal OEM XP it says wrong OS version. Im kinda confused here. If I install XPe should'nt I just use that? If I am going to do the whole install just to get 3 files I was hoping one of you guys that did it already could share. If not, or if you think I should do the install of XPe to learn more about what Im trying do, than thats cool too. Just trying to clear some things up before I try anything. My goal is to install XP beast edition onto a CF then apply the EWF to it.

    Seems no one else has tried the EWF with a standard USB drive either.

    on another note ive been reading all morning on some 98micro embedded installs and you can get the OS down to like 15mb. I'm going to play around with that a bit too.

    If you search around then I'm sure you can find the EWF and MinLogon files. Otherwise, yes you need to install the XPe tools in order to get the files.

    Yes, I've used EWF on USB drives. I have a system that boots from a uDOC and another from a 2GB USB flash drive.

    Thank you for the help, ill let you know how it goes. How did you get your USB drive to work, ive heard a lot of mixed review on this subject, but from what i've read it *is* possible, just a ***** to do.

    for tutorials and FAQs. It's fairly easy if you're comfortable with regedit.

    You need the right hardware: motherboard with a BIOS that support hi-speed USB booting (typically a new mobo with AMIBIOS or PhoenixBIOS, not Award), and a fast USB flash drive or just a regular HDD in a USB enclosure.

    Well I picked up my IDE > CF adaptor and 1Gb flash drive. The flash drive I got supports 80x read/write so It should work pretty good. Ive got EWF working good in VMware. Ive basically got all the software config done and your instructions work flawless if followed correct. Thank you for the tutorial. So far under VMware im getting 15 second cold boots using XP beast, minlogon and EWF. Hopefully I will get 15 second boots when I get my install on the flash drive. The only thing im still working on right now is how im going to configure my IG map data.

    Up and embedded thank you much for the help SFiorito. Could not have done it without your tutorial. Everything is working great. Just one question.

    If I shutdown my embedded system. Remove the CF card and plug it into a hotswap drive on another PC can I add files to it or does the EWF overlay still prevent writes even without the actual OS running? Im curious if I can edit things on a different PC without screwing up the install.

    YES you can plug the CF card into another PC and modify configuration files (like RoadRunner config for example).

    EWF only runs when windows loads.

    Sorry to bring up an old thread. Everything is working (EWF, MINLOGIN), but my system wont hibernate when I tell it to. It just acts like nothing happened.

    Any ideas?

    It worked fine before ewf
