    HOORAY!!!

OK, got it working. I re-read all the threads (ugh) and came across SlashEMc2k's post about having the same problem. See it HERE. I still don't understand why the download from Microsoft's site contains the old files or where these "new" files come from, but I can confirm that my EWF install is now working.

    Can someone clarify for me...

EWF *completely* disables writes to the drive? Or are "some" kind of writes allowed?

Also, when I run "ewfmgr c:" it says:

"memory used for data 325632 bytes"

What exactly is this referring to? I am installing this all on a 1GB Extreme III CF

    Question

I've got everything up and running w/ ewf and it states that its enabled and it is indeed working.. but if I shut my machine down and restart it safemode / last known and startup normal configuration shows...

I can boot normally and EWF is still enabled...

Intellaworks: read the document linked at the beginning of this thread...

Jackboot: all writes are disabled to the drive as long as ewf is enabled (unless you start using extremely lowlevel system calls to write to the disk, but in general all writes are disabled). the memory usage is how much ram your disk overlay is taking up. remember: all writes are stored in memory by ewf while the system is running. when you reboot it either loses that data or, if you decide to commit it (ewfmgr c: -commit) then it saves it do disk.

    .

One bug I’ve found is that booting with EWF, XP always brings up the recovery options at boot up. We can disable this by deleting the ‘bootstat.dat’ file
got it, that defiantly wasn't there last time I read it, thanks just the same !!!

I was curious how you got the data from one drive to another ?? I was planning on using ghost boot but it wont see the Fat16 drive, I was able to boot to dos using format c:/s on my CF so I know that its working...

I've been thinking about using xcopy ???

Yeah, I figured that tweak out in Nov or Dec. I always try to update this thread whenever I update those instructions. xcopy should work as long as it doesn't screw with the file names or file attributes. I just connected my drive to another system (using a USB enclosure) and the CF card using a USB card reader and transferred that way. Not the fastest method out there, but the least painful. I couldn't for the life of me find a fully functional xcopy for DOS. I guess I could make one of those BartPE discs. Never used one before so not sure if it lets you transfer files from/to different volumes... Might try that next time.

Don't use the barPE disks xcopy because it doesn't allow you to copy hidden files. I was just in there playing around and blew my mind when I did xcopy /? there were only like 7 switches.. I looked at the date of the xcopy and it was like 97 so I had to add my windows XP xcopy (which does have all the switches)

SF, you should have xcopy on your XP system c:\windows\system32\xcopy

edit: your right, hard to find one for DOS
