Formatted cluster size and wasted space on CF cards?

Just wondering how much disk space is being wasted when you use FAT vs NTFS on your compact flash cards. It occurred to me while formatting a drive today that the FAT cluster size is 16k vs 1K for NTFS on a 1gig drive. Is this significant or are we talking about under a megabyte? Seems like it could be a bit more....

Another question I have along similar lines is how much RAM is typically consumed for disk writes when EWF is used on the averagish system. Anyone have any experience with this yet?

Depends on the size of your files,
Lots of small files under 16k will lead to a lot of waste.
    or files, slightly over, etc

Unless you're installing software with EWF enabled or deliberately making changes to the filesystem you won't use up very much RAM. I've usually seen it at less than 1MB during normal operation.

I have an ancient 256meg CF card that I was thinking of experimenting with. It benchmarks between 2x-5x speed though... I may just break down and pick up a 512meg sandisk ultraII, costco was selling these for $48 although... I just saw the extremeIII 20mb/sec.... wow, price is a bit high though $219... decisions decisions...<grin>

Opps forgot to mention this is the 2gig version being sold at bananapc.com.

    I got my 1Gig ExtremeIII for $109 at B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=356015&is=REG

Keep in mind that there's no tool for making the disk "fixed" like there is for the UltraII and ExtremeI.

Ok, since my last post I've had to do a couple of more installs and this is what I've found. For an Nlite CD epia drivers integrated I have a 150 meg ISO image, that when installed gives me a windows folder that is

    Fat32
    size 386MB
    Size on disk 398MB
    wasted space 12MB

    NTFS 4kb cluster size (default)
    size 388 MB
    size on disk 393MB
    wasted space 5MB

    NTFS 512b cluster size
    size 388 MB
    size on disk 388MB
    wasted space 457kb

So what does this mean... Well it's like frodo said, unless you really need to squeeze an extra 5-10 mb out of your CF card, don't worry about it...
