So does anyone have a link to the actual fixed disk utility?
Bootprep is part of Microsoft's WinXP embedded. I would download from their sit the trial software and install it.
EXE: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...edded_sp2e.exe
ISO: Download details: Windows XP Embedded SP2 Feature Pack 2007
I haven't read the EULA enough times to state that the BOOTPREP can be distributed outside of XPe or by non MS folks. However, there are other good programs wrapped up in XPe.

I have one of these: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...&reqPage=Model
And it's marked "removable", yet it is detected and partitionable by FDISK.
I have tried using the ATCFWCHG util on it, but it didn't work. I was able to install Windows onto it a couple of times, now I just get a disk error on first boot even tho I can still see it fine as a drive. (Yes, I have used an IDE-CF adaptor, etc...)
I emailed Seagate and got this reply:
I don't think he knows what he is talking about.Thank you for your enquiry.
Please beware, Microsoft does not support there operating system installed on an USB drive.
Seagate does not have the special partitioning utility to modifiy the partition table on your micro drive.
Should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us. In order to allow us to deal with all enquiries as efficiently and accurately as possible we would ask that you include any previous emails when replying to us.
Any ideas from the MP3car crew?
Thanks.
The MicroDrive does work for booting. Have you tried formatting using the XP CD and canceling out after?
I have been able to boot from the drive, however (and I posted another thread about this that has gone unanswered) I don't believe Windows XP is able to create a swap file on a removable drive, so I get an error at each boot.
EDIT: Just playing around with this some more and noticed something weird...
BIOS boot order: USB CD-Rom, IDE1 (the CF drive is IDE1, not IDE0)
When Windows XP CD is in the CD-Rom drive, it prompts me to "Press any key to boot from CD". If I ignore this, it proceeds to boot from the CF Hard Drive.
If I remove the CD from the drive and attempt to boot, it gives me a disc boot failure. (Yes, failure even with the CF drive set as the first boot device.)
Seagate still maintains they have no tool to change it to a removable drive and I continue to get pagefile errors.
Ready to throw project out the window.
Crap, just got an email back from seagate saying that they don't have a utility to mark it as fixed.
There goes another hundred dollars. I should have just bought a pre-assembled carputer from the start, but they're all too big.
Aargh! Any ideas?
