    Optimizing XP MCE

Well, I finally got my system together and running. It's still a little buggy, but it works none the less.

One problem I've been having in particular is OS optimization.

I've used Nlite to cutdown the OS. But for some reason I can only get it down to 420MB. Size is a factor because I'd like to be able to install it on a 512mb Compact Flash Card. I've used minlogon and bootvis and my boot times are still up at 30+ seconds.

If anyone has any suggestions or an nlite setting file that can help me to cut it down more, or anything to help boot times, help would be appreciated.

The system I'm running is as follows

    Windows XP MCE 2005
    1500+ Athlon 4 Mobile
    256mb PC2100 DDR
133mhz bus (as reported by bios)
    10GB 7200RPM Western digital HDD
    Sound Blaster Live! Value

i don't think you'll get MCE much smaller than that. i'm running it on my desktop system and it's a bit of a hog (just the MCE part, the rest is just XP Pro), so I think 30 second boot is the best you'll get. i'm assuming you've gone through all the usual optimization steps like tweaking services, etc. right? i don't think MCE is the best choice for a CarPC system.

Yah, I did optimize all my services, etc.

The only reason I'm stuck with MCE is because of the remote I'm using. It only works with MCE. Anyone know any way to make it work not using MCE or to cut out the media center part so I just have mce and allow the remote to work? That way I could use a different front end with my remote.

Try to use girder with the remote. If it works in MCE, then it will work in PRO.

Since I don't know what that is. . . I guess I'll have to for it

    Edit:

I just looked it up. So, girder allows me to use the MCE remote with any operating system and remap the buttons to perform the functions I want?

Girder is basically an app that allows you to control a lot of system functions using different things. For example you could hack up a trackball mouse to be your volume controller. But for you, you'd just need to configure it to use your remote

wow, very useful. . . thats awesome!!! I could use this to control my volume from a knob!

But will it work for the MCE remote? From what I have seen, other versions of windows don't have the proper drivers to use the remote.

According to their website it will work. So I'm buying it. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks

With Girder, you don't need drivers for the remote. Girder becomes the driver. Then you are able to use frotnends like Frodoplayer or RR with the remote.
