sweet, im totally unattended now, i cheated too, heheheh
    gotta love that,

just out of curiousity, how many compents do you use in your normal xp install?

i must say, i've never had more fun in my life, this is great, never though debuging little errors would be so fun, but yeh, ive had a few things along the way, but as i pointed out in previous post, i can and will change the txtsetup.sif to reflect any changes i made to make it work, alot of drivers, are like half removed now, but since i need the shared file alot of them use, they still show up as being components, so i figure im more around 1000 then 1207 components now

damn, i got so far, and forgot to make sure internet worked, now, i have to go way back to find out where to start from again

heheh i messed the inet up on test 1, had to start over, im pretty close to where i was, further in the drivers side though

    edit
well its 12:30am i have successfully removed all of the drivers that didn't apply to me, keeping just there needed shared components, but removing whats not needed, windows is posting, i hope to have a comparsion between my nlited xp and this, meaning the difference in # files/size tommarrow night some time

if you removed drivers with shared parts, would you just add back the shared part manually? or just not remove the other drivers?

oh, and what file does the reg entry for minlogon.exe get put?, cause if i back up that file and some others, it will avoid me having to start from scratch when i next version of nlite comes out, since i could just copy over a couple files

i made a mistake, removed the themes service, when i got rid of user interface core, just added back shsvcs.dll so i guess i just made the theme service liter, cause i got luna working with just that one file, heheh, but as it wont load a theme , if my network connection is trying to show in taskbar, i need to find that file next, maybe ill do the same for rpc, there must be something in it I can get rid of

finds 1096 components but its really like 850 components with 246 partial components, heheheh, from over 3200,

Dirt here I am ready to get educated in modding XP. Things I want to accomplish
    1. Make a fast more responsive light weight secure OS
    2. Incorporate a nice looking shell replacment that uses less RAM
    3. Make a single user OS out of XP similar to the way 9x is
and do all this or as much as I can silently at installation
I do most of my learning like gdogg does trial and error(mostly error for me though)
I got the shell replacement thing down but untested find shell do make cab then insert it into source in place of explorer shell after renaming it Kinda unsure bout the rest though

well a good spot to start is with minlogon, follow what i say in 2 posts up, first download minlolon, here, once you've got it,first extract, then open xp system builder, then point to the windows it will use, with open, then goto the i386 directory of choice, then one its finished that part, goto where its says minlogon in the menu, add, and point it to the folder you have minlogon, then follow the above, with nename and stuff, this will be under the i386 director before you create iso with nlite, but after you do you nlite removal of stuff, that will make it so a new user account wont be made, and it will always use default user account

I can open system builder, open the I386 folder on my desk top it goes through it component thing and finds them but it wont make any changes. I do save as in another folder and this folder just gets some.sif files. The minlogon thing still isnt highlited. Some time ago I added minlogon to my system 32 folder by renamimg winlogon to winlogon.bak adding minlogon after I renamed this, and then adding a reg patch. A lot of steps but WOW was my machine faster.
One time I added minlogon to the I386 folder after I renamed it and got BSOD after first reboot.
I wonder if you are a gamer? When I made changes my saved scores wouldnt save when I rebooted, guess I goofed something.
Have you gotton it to install silently from your sourse cd?
I guess what I am trying to do is make XP kinda like what Neptune would have been if Uncle Bill LOL hadnt shot the project down. or kinda like XP Starter Edition but better.
Even if I dont accomplish what I intend to do I will still have fun modding my OS I have a good cd burner and a whole stack of cds and know where to get more if needed.
I hope I didnt bore you guys and all the help will be appreciated.

when you choose to add minlogon using my app you need to point it to a directory which has the minlogon.exe file. my app will then add the registry value and copy the minlogon.exe file to the XP install directory you opened. Once you've saved your setup you need to burn an ISO. I recommend using Magic ISO. Using that create a new ISO and copy everything that nLite created then just copy the files you saved from my app into the I386 directory using the Magic ISO application. It will ask if you want to overwrite the existing files, click yes. You now have an XP install CD with everything you removed from nLite plus anything you did with my app. my app doesn't have minlogon run automatically because I have seen problems occur during the XP setup as well as installing other software or hardware. that's why i keep winlogon activated. once you set up your system all you need to do is go into the system32 directory and rename minlogon.exe to winlogon.exe and reboot. if instead you want to run minlogon from the get-go then you need to simply install it using my app and then just go into the I386 directory and delete winlogon.ex_, rename minlogon.ex_ to winlogon.ex_, open up txtsetup.sif and dosnet.inf search for minlogon and delete those lines. like i said though, certain things you do in XP may require the security features in winlogon.

I am doing something wrong I hope you dont get frustrated with me. I can open your app and it sees all the files in the I386 directory but it will not make any changes. The minlogon isnt highlighted and will not let me choose the file.

I have finally been playing with XP System builder all the day yesterday. Its indeed great tool, but I have realised there is something suspicios with it anyway. I have done like 15 attems from most agressive remoavl attemps to HW only polishing (dont blame me from it - dont you do the same? ) and no matter what component I remove I do not get the result that would correspond to what I remove. Note I have been playing A LOT with XPE so I can say I understand the phylosophy of its component system and importancy of critical components.
Sooo... after playing with the tool I tend to say it removes something else then you select in fact Or to be more specific - it does some more changes to configuration then you want it to do.
Let me show you an example - I have created fresh nLite install of WinXP SP2 CZ Professional/corporate with just 4 drivers embedded and some tweaks selected. No hotfixes integration. I have installed OS from this media and the install looked all right at least after brief spot check.
Then I extracted I386 folder back from ISO, run your tool over it which I only used to remove some more HW drivers (monitor drivers left, SD card subsystem drivers, some HID drivers and tape drivers). I did not even touch SW section.
After saving the session and importing modified I386 folder back to original ISO, I have installed it.
WinXP now shows currupted regional settings (such as some fonts, such as the one used to show file names) are incorrect showing incorrect character instead of correct regional ones. This also results in corrupted menu system, since folders there use regional characters in their names so for example folder of accessories is shown twice, once as "Příslušenství" which is correct and once as "Pislu@&ensty" which is corrupted.
Also, removing some harmless components as DOS support files (attrib...) results in unexplainable behaviour during OS installation.
Since I have not seen anybody else reporting such issues, might the localised OS be the root cause? Or can the nLite integrated drivers/tweaks be an issue?
