    XPe

Ok.......im just trying to better understand myself. I am trying to get minlogon and ewf and HORM on my pc.

Before i download XPe should i have a fresh original XP Pro loaded?

So i download XPe SP2 and do i install it onto another partition?

Now the files i need to put in the windows directories...do i put them on the original harddrive(partition) or to another partition?

OK, well your questions are a little confusing, but I'll try to help.
In order to use XPe, you need to have Windows 2K SP2, Windows XP SP1, or Windows XP SP2. You need one of these OSs to develope and build an XPe image. You do not necessarily need to have a fresh copy of XP Pro loaded.

Once you verify you have the correct OS installed, you can install the XPe toolkit. You are going to develop your XPe OS image from within your XP/Win2K operating system - so you will install the XPe kit within your XP/Win2K OS.

You will then proceed to create your own XPe image by running the tools within Start->Programs->Microsoft XP Embedded. Once you successfully create an image without errors, you need to load it onto your target device.

I set up a dual boot system. First OS is of course my Windows XP Pro SP1. The second OS is my Windows XP Embedded image. I did a dual boot setup with two separate hard drives. Each hard drive holds an OS. You should be able to set up and test something similar by creating another partition on one hard drive to put your XPe image on.

Reboot the system and select the XPe OS on the dual boot screen. First time booting up on your image should load up the FBA. It should start loading all of your components and installing. The screen may flicker a bunch of times - this is normal.

If after booting to the XPe OS, it loads up the FBA, seems to install components, reboots, and keeps doing the same cycle - something is wrong.
If you have this problem, let me know here and I'll explain more.

Also, if anyone posts any questions here in regards to XPe, I ask that you PM me and let me know that you did so......I'd love to help, it's just that sometimes I forget to follow up on these threads. A friendly PM would help much.

    Hey Bojan,
Believe it or not I started playing around with XPe this week. It took around 30 minutes for me to build a complete image. Unfortunately it took me around 10 full hours to figure out how to actually get it to boot up correctly.

After this week, I'm officially hooked on XPe. I'm familiar with Sean Liming's XP Embedded Advanced book. From reviews of the book around the net, his book seems to be about the best for beginners and advanced users of XPe.

    Link to buy his book:

I was going to order one of his books just now, but it's on backorder and doesn't say when they will get more. I sent Sean an email asking him when he expects it to ship out. I'd like to know before I order. I'll share with you guys here what his response is to my email.

Some useful links that I've come across:
    Windows for Devices Forums
Another forum I'm not sure if useful yet
Instructions on how to compenentize drivers
    Basic MSDN XPe info
    MSDN Supplied Tutorials for XPe

    official XPe Homepage

Your second question asking if XPe is the right tool for a carpc......
My first impressions of XPe is that it's probably best viewed as a hobby or something to play around with - rather than being perfect for use in a carputer.

    My reasons:
XPe is not the easiest to use. After all that time I spent working on booting my image - once it installed and I was logged into X embedded automatically, there was zero functionality. I was unable to right click and get menus, I was unable to set the time, unable to do pretty much anything. XPe by default is very locked down, probably because it's lacking the components to do anything. lol...

So, my next try at rebuilding my image, I was able to add context menus (when I right click, I get a menu). I also added stuff to the start menu (my computer, network places, etc...).

So after a total of about 16 hours or so, I'm at the point where I can install software within XPe, but have no sound (can't figure out how to load the drivers for it yet), can't change the timezone (explained in Sean's book, can't find it anywhere else on the net yet). I was able to install Frodo Player, Road Runner, and Media Engine all fine. When I run Frodo, I get an error message saying something about can't access database. Road Runner runs great - just can't hear anything (no sound drivers). Media Engine runs fine, but errors out because there's no sound drivers installed yet.

XPe really is a great tool, but like I said, if you are going into it - look at it as something to do and a learning experience. The benefits will be great when you are finally done with everything, but I have no idea how long that may take.

If you expect it to be as easy to do as regular windows, I'll tell you now it's not. If something is missing or doesn't work, you will have to figure out which component, add it to the image, rebuild the image, then redeploy to your target.

Also, another issue with XPe is that it's hardware dependent. What that means is, you are building an image for your particular setup. I could send you my image, but that doesn't mean it'll work the same on your system as mine. That has it's advantages and disadvantages. On one hand it's more efficient because it's designed specifically for what you need. Then again, to change hardware or machines, you may have to rebuild your image with drivers for the new system.

Windows XP has around 10,000 components. Windows XP Embedded Toolkit allows you to create an operating system with as many or as few of these components as you want. My first image that I created booted up in less than half the time as my normal Win XP Pro.

If you don't have a lot of freetime, I don't suggest playing around with XPe. I am fortunate enough to be able to work on it while at work. I'm currently running a dual boot setup. One of my next goals is to figure out how to create a bootable CD Rom with the image on it. It's 135 Megabytes!

Any other questions for stuff I didn't mention, please ask

well, since my last post, I was just able to get sound working. I also added the abilities to change the clock time, more administrative tools, ability to change resolution, and more....

Basically, the more time you put into it, the easier it is to do. Next on the list - I need to build the via sound drivers into the image, and play around with building some front ends into the image as well....

fyi - I didn't have to buy any books to get this far. I'm thinking about picking one or two up to learn more advanced stuff.....but you should be able to get an image up and running for the most part without paying a dime. That way, if you like it, you can pursue it further - otherwise you aren't financially involved.

I'm playing around with it now on my 2.4 GHz carputer, because I have an older Epia 800 MHz coming in the mail, and an old 400 mhz machine sitting around. I figured I can make a more compact image for each of those and still get some use out of them

i've spent a lot of time working with XPe which is how I figured out how to use minlogon and EWF on XP. The problem with a lot of front ends is that they are not built with XPe in mind, so they use a lot of features that require lots of components in an XPe image. either that or we use devices that require lots of OS features. so in the end, by the time you create an image to run some of the better front ends you'll have no advantage over just using an nLited XP installation. also, don't forget the drawback XPe has in price over XP.

I want to be sure I understand your post.... are you saying that implementation of EWF & HORM is possible without using XPe... and to do this, am I correct in assuming that If I follow your instructions from your other thread, that I can achieve this? If so.... VERY KEWL and thank you for your research and efforts!

From my reading, I would prefer not to config XPe.
