Thread: Hey guys check this out 49 meg xp

I went through the process to remove the files that the forum post recommends AFTER applying the registry settings and upon reboot Win XP gave me all sorts of missing file errors. So if you think that you can just apply the reg patch and then remove the files from XP and -Viola! you have a pruned XP system- Think again. You will blow your OS out of the water! I did. Luckily , I already have a small nLited Xp install so it was just a matter of reinstalling that - took 8 minutes or so . No biggie.

I have my install down to about 775 meg with no pagefile. I am hesitant in removing more components.

My Nlited XP install was just under 200Meg and everything except Speedcam alerts in Mapmonkey worked. I never used .NET apps so didn't need the .NET Framework installing.

Nonetheless, one would think that with the amount of experimenting that so many users have done, it would be possible to find a shared nlite settings.ini that can work for carpcs with all the features (phoco, destinator, etc)

NLite has to be one of the coolest programs I have seen but I have tried to burn 20 images and only 2 of them have given me sucessful installs.

I reduced me footprint to 320Mb and I know I can get it down further it just takes a lot of time re-trying configurations and burning them to CD.


I see the advantage of reducing the install size of XP but if your running off a 2.5" hard drive does it really matter if the install is 400Mb vs 800Mb, I am not worried so much about the size of the install it's what services are starting and the custom tweaks like minilogon that make big improvements on boot time.

Also if people posted there NLite settings would they work on different XP builds. I have three different XP disc's here with various services packs and each one needs to be configured differently.

Aeqis was working on extracting the win xp core and just adding needed things see MSFN post earlier in thread his project has hit a snag and he is going to take a break from it for a while. He had a stable xp of 46 meg and was working on a stand alone installer for it. I wish him the best.
