home sux... get pro.
Hi
Pretty fundamental question really. I have looked through the FAQs but not found an answer. I've always used Windows 2000 previously, but I think XP looks like it should be more useful in a car-pc. But should I buy Windows XP Professional or Home Edition?
I have a SP13000 1Gb RAM 40Gb HDD and Xenarc 800x480 USB Touchscreen, and I want to run MP3 player, some Sat-Nav software, Reversing Camera, OBD-II stuff and a few other things.
Would appreciate your opinion.
Richard.

Looking at this MS page
Windows XP Home Edition Comparison Guide the only thing that sounds relevant is encryption (in case the PC/car is stolen).

There are a lot of differences, it is up to you if they are worth the price.

In Pro and not Home:
Remote Desktop
Offline files and folders
SMP (2 or more processors ( limit 2 to pro tho))
Encrypting file system
ACL (windows access control)
Centralizsed Administration
Group Policy
Automatic install, repair, ect of applications (applys to domains)
Roming User Profiles ( Domain again)
Remote Installation of Windows (i guess thats not really a feature once its installed :0
MUI crap
Also not metioned by MS themselves 0> ability to join a domain =/
hah, can you believe MS actuatually labled multitasking a feature =) i guess they wanted to be sure not to be confused with their dos days :0
Crouching Tiger, Drunken Kitty
I'm very glad I asked. I will need to join my PC to my domain. Pro it is.Originally Posted by cheerio

I dont understand that at all. There are only three reasons to want Pro over Home:
1. Be a memebr of a network domain
2. Multiple processor support
3. File permissions (ACL)
None of these 3 you need so Pro is just a waste of money.
Remote desktop is a must for me, I am much more comfortable performing maintenance on my carPC from the comfort of my desk.
Offline files could be useful (if it worked better).
And of course, Pro exposes a lot more settings, allowing for better tweaking.
