    God and XP hate me

So it was in my car and running, then one day "hal.dll is missing, please reinstall came up, I tried every method listed here:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm
Now things were really messed up, so i tried to reinstall windows, it got worse from here. For a while it wouldn't detect my HD, i changed some bios settings, not I could get to the Set-up page where I reformatted, the slow way then let xp instal its self. Then when the computer rebooted it went straight to that again. After like 4 more tries of this i change the boot sequence where it will check the hd first then I tried it with the Cd first. When i set it to HD first, I would get "error:unable to load operating system" If it was to boot from CD, the setup would repeat. When i used a windows 98 disk, i got the message: "boot disk failure, please insert system disk and hit any key"
point is, after 8 hours of work I have a blank hard drive that I can't put a OS on? Should I write zero's to it and write again? Also in the bios settings, it hink i tried it with the drive set to LARGE and CHS and AUTO. (btw the number of sectors and cylinders and heads are all VERY different depending on the configuration I use whether it be LARGE,CHS or auto.

    help me

What brand HD is it and how long have you had it? (as long as in mobile or non). I believe I went through this experience and eventually RMA'd the HD (Western Digital). They immediately shipped a new one to me while I sent them my bad one. Luckily it was still under warranty. Get a hold of the manufacture's "disk doctor/diagnosis" type app, run it, and use that as your verification of a bad drive.

    1. Set your BIOS settings to default; let the BIOS detect the HD capacity.
    2. Run the XP install CD and, when formatting, DO NOT SELECT QUICK FORMAT.
    3. Go along with the rest of the XP install.

As stupid as I am, I've never been able to use the Recovery Console successfully. HAL errors are the worst kinds of errors you can come across.

120 Gb wd caviar, I've had it for 4 months' althoigh it had been in storage (pun intended) for 3 months.
    8mb buffer
OEM drive so I have no documentation or disks, sounds like i'll have to get that diagnostic off of the internet....

BTW when I hooked it up into a 2nd system I was able to see and access all of my files, So i think the HD is not messed up. I was the boot files that were messed up.

When i first installed xp when i got it, XP wouldn't take directly so i had a friend help me and we installed o98, then immeadatle upgraded and everything worked fine

don't know if that helps at all.

    Hi there

I also think that this sounds like a broke HDD.
Usually you can/should leave the bios setting to auto on the most Mainboards.

The thing with that W98 bootdisk might be an to ntfs formated drive, bacuase your w98 cannot read it.

lol, what a coincidence. I had the same drive, 120 gig cavalier?, for almost half a year before I went to use it. It was an OEM one I got as a gift and just never got around to putting it into a system. I think I also went through a similar thing where I could slave it on another PC and it I can browse it just fine, but it seemed like the boot sector was always corrupted no matter what I did. After I got the diagnostic utility from Western Digital's website, I ran through the tests and they said that it had enough errors to be considered a bad drive. Went back to WD's site, registered for an RMA, put in that information and the drive's serial # which proved it was still under warranty, and I had a new refurb'd hd in less then a week. They provided a pre-payed shipping bag with it to send my bad drive back....easy and fast, didn't cost me anything except time.

p.s. i have a few of those 120 giggers, all the rest are still working fine, as is the replacement drive which is now being used as a HTPC hard drive (so lots of recorded content get written and deleted from it).

thats great news, I'm at home now and been working at my friends apartment, so all my stuff is over there. I did download the lifeguard tools to run the needed diagnostics, they are burnt on a cd so that will be my first step when i get over there prolly tonight. Sounds like this will delay installation for another few days then...

Its not a bad drive, Does this mean that I am a bad person?

Everything works now... I wrote zeros to the drive, put it on primary master and selected LBA and now windows installs fine, now I have a few hours of upgrading the software and transfering my music.

ive had the same problem twice! ive now got 2 hard disks that wont boot in my car pc. So im using one in my other comp.

Now the third hard disk im just installing a FULL version of XP because i dont wanna risk it happening again.

How did you write all zeros to the drive? i did a full format and it didnt help.

Why is xp lite doing this?
