    actually, i'm working on a whole new version of XP System Builder. the long term goal would be to actually "build" an XP image like Target Designer does, but with my busy schedule it may take a while. I've really gotten into the whole build process, it's just a matter of seeing if we can tap into it to build an XP image instead. The second, quicker, option I'm working on right now is on using a Target Designer configuration (the .slx file that contains the configuration for your XPe image) and use that to decide what to remove from an XP CD. that way you know there are no dependency issues. Unfortunately right now it gets stuck after the 1st reboot (the GUI setup screen) so something is getting screwed, but the fact it gets that far to me is a good sign. there's a lot of stuff we can do with the XPe database and libraries. I wish MSFT would consider the hobbyist license like Andy Allred wrote about in his blog earlier this year when they saw my EWF hack.

    I don't know whats going wrong. Isn't there a place where I can download a demo version?

    @konnichiwa: Couldn't you write a little manual?

    Here you go:

    I downloaded and tried the xpe image and it worked. ran it from a cf card. Use the one that best decribes your hardware.

    I had XPe running for 4 months before i switched to nLight and the only reason for that is because my phidgets controller would not install an HID device. so if anyone want to know how to generate a full version of xpe just PM me. I'll tell you how to get around the trial thing but not how to create the images and what components to use.

    But if you go with CE, what do you do for GPS software? Any of the CE versions out there have to be recompiled to run on a x86 chip. Some problem with any other 3rd party software you might want to use...

    If you wanted to purchase the WinCE Automotive dev kit, where do you get it from? The last time I looked MS was keeping almost everything with that for its "partners"...

    Windows XP Embedded would be for sure the ideal solution for any car PC. It is just a matter of learning how to build the image of the operating system for your particular system. The whole point of Embedded is to have a completely customised image that will run all of the applications that are needed but, has the smallest possible footprint and so the shortest boot time and the fastest running system.

    I have no knowledge of XP Embedded other than what I have just said but would be very interested to hear from anyone else who is looking into running this OP in their car as I am also planning to this. All I have to do now is teach myself how to build the image!

    you're better off just using nLite. i've done a lot of work with XP Embedded and it really has little advantages over a good nLite setup for just a hobbiest. and even if you get the key for the tools you still need a key for the image or it'll expire.
