Hi , new to the forum and sort of in a hurry tonight so if i seem rude i apoligize,
long story short, im building your average car pc in my truck and i have a few quick questions.
A. i know NOTHING about wifi internet, i live in toronto canada (well burlington to be exact) and would be using it for MSN, Email, Music not just email.)
2. My truck has air ride, will constant movement of the suspension harm the hard drive?

my main concern is the internet...whats my simplest/cost effective way to do this?

yeah, you might have a problem with the HDD bouncing up and down but most people report heat is the main hdd killer. So make it its' well ventilated

as for the wifi.. I just bought a WiFi PCI card and it works fine wherever there's a hot-spot. There's also USB adapters that might work but I dont know if they have a good range or not

you aren't going to get all over Wifi like you would say with a cell phone. The only way to get that anywhere coverage is to pair your carpc with a cell and get a damn good (read damn expensive) data plan. You can do the same with a PCMCIA cell/wifi card as well if your carpc has a PCMCIA slot. As far as a hard drive, go with a notebook drive. I had mine in the car for about 2 years with poly engine mounts. If it can handle those vibes, air ride should be a cakewalk.

You could always use Rogers or Bells portable internet! Rogers seems cheaper right now

Have you tried them yourself? I was told that you can get constant connection only if the car is not moving.

You could always use Rogers or Bells portable internet! Rogers seems cheaper right now

Its a cell phone signal. Can you make phone calls while moving? If so, then you can use your internet when moving. It transmits a dial-up internet connection over the cell network. Of course there are more expensive 3G networks, but those work while moving too.

Actually the rogers and bell only work in a certian coverage of that tower
then when you go into another tower location it has to reconnect.
like a giant wifi. no so bad but if you are streaming music it is a problem

So I believe what gt__1 said. You have to stay within the same tower to get constant connection. Not the same as cellphone signal.

ferget internet unless your willing to war drive.

were getting hosed here in canada
$250/month and its still not unlimited.

regular surfing and email will eat all the package up in no time.
