    5dbi inside vs. 3dbi outside?

My linksys wifi card came with a 5dbi antenna. Originally, I had planned to use an external antenna, but I'm rethinking that now. It seems that the only low profile wifi antennas available are only 3bi gain. I can't bring myself to stick an 18"+ antenna on my car.

I'm guessing the 3bi antenna will still pull a better signal, but is it really worth the time and money? I'm hoping for your anecdotal experiences here.

IMHO any antenna external to the car will greatly improve your wireless reception.

I have a 9" mag mount connected to my EDUP PCI wifi card and get a miles better signal when on the roof than when in the car, it increases probably by 30% or more.

Isn't Wifi going to turn out to be 10x more hazzardous to health than any mobile phone?

They're talking about removing it from Schools & Hospitals now in the UK.
    Apparently the radiation is dangerous!

I have noticed my 9dbi aeriel gives me a headache if I sit too close to it

You should go read up before you comment!

This is a topic of hot debate in the UK now, more so than mobile phone masts as Schools and Hospitals have been fitted out with wifi and people are forced to be in close proximity to the antennas. There may be no proven link that it causes health problems, but there is also no evidence that they don't!!!
You know, like all those kids who live beneath high voltage National Grid pylons are at a much greater risk of developing leukemia - That ones been know for years.

The UK gov't had plans to put wifi antennas on every lamp post, and a black box receiver in every 'taxed & registered' car, in order to facilitate the wireless tracking of cars for their future road charging scheme!

If wifi proves to cause long term harm, then this crap charging idea will get shelved

The recommended maximum UK radiation intake before any recognised
health risks are acknowledged is something like 3x that of the rest of Europe & US.

And there are a whole bunch of people who have shielded their houses from wifi and mobile phone signals by using wire mesh and it is said to reduce things like migraine dramatically.

Don't dismiss it as BS too quickly

There is a hell of a lot more EM radiation in the world now than there ever was even 60yrs ago. The advent of things like mobile phones, wifi, bluetooth, LW/MW/FM, DVB, DAB, and all the other EMI that comes from all this modern electronics must have some long term effect.

They've only just noticed that guys who watched the first nuclear bomb tests have nearly all had some form of cancer or are dead already! 60 odd years later

    Wow, good info there.

That's just my point - there is no evidence yet to reject the hypothesis that there is no damage. As far as scientists know today, there is no way a small wifi aerial such as yours should cause a headache - therefore if true you've got the evidence right there! Go to a doctors, get a scan, change the world!

As long as you're using omni's and stay within the fcc limits for unlicensed power levels, wifi isn't going to hurt you. It's when you start adding amps and directionals that things can get out of hand.

Only a transmitting antanna has a antenna gain.
An receiving antenna has no gain.
It's not possible to make some sort of EM vacumer.
