I know you read this in a doctor's office, but do you happen to know of an online version of the article?
while I was in a doctor's office today, I read about the "100 dollar" laptop that the design guru guy made and it claims that the two small antennas pick up WiFi up to 1/2 mile !!!
is this true? and if so, WE NEED TO FREAKING SOURCE THE PARTS. if the laptop is only 100 bucks, then these .5 mile range wireless parts should be cheap.
My usb wireless barley picks up my wirless network from 35 feet. (it is through 2 walls and the car is a lot of metal. (i have the usb wireless thing under my car seat so the metal is probably killling my connection)

and this laptop was designed before Wireless N was even available so I'm kind of skeptical myself.
it was a magazine about business and design success people.
we should be able to find more info on the 100 dollar laptop because it is famous because he made it so all of the poor kids around the world without electricity could still connect on the internet and learn.

Some kids have electricity and no computer, they just plug the AC adaptor in their wall. The kids without electricity can use the handcarry generator which the OLPC is delivered with. 1 minute of muscles on the generator should provide at least 10 minutes of computer use, I think this is the hope but is not finalized yet.

Some kids live in cities with cheap ADSL available, the connection can be even cheaper for school kids by government support.
Kids without cheap adsl nearby can connect using the half-mile range Wifi mesh-network through other students to a Wifi hotspot within 10 mile range (as long as there is a kid within each half mile range). The school who is not within cheap ADSL can get satellite internet up and downlink installed from other organization. It could cost around 300$ per month to have such satellite broadband internet per school.
so does this mean it's not the antenna of the laptop that is so good, but a broadcasted "piggy back" connection is shared by others?
"One Laptop Per Child" is one of the groups trying to get the $100 laptops out. Wired Magazine did a great article about it, and they did mention wifi.
This laptop is fricken cool! Although no offence, I do believe they should ban sales to Nigeria........I have enough emails in my inbox already!
One guy was out on a mission to change the world.....well the developing world. I have actually been reading up on it, from design to sourcing and implementation.
It features a REALLY cool AMD duron processor. That processor has pretty much been designed to actually switch OFF during keystrokes to help with power consumption! AMD supply the proccessor and chipset I believe for the cost of manufacturing only. This is one of the reason why I am a AMD fanboy
Intel did try to throw off the $100 laptop as a rumour and nearly fuxxored it all up....and the OLPC looked like a one in a million shot but was rescued eventually but thanks to intel, the $100 laptop is not $100 anymore but more like $180. The creator did block the sales of these laptops to western countries, but due to this problem of costing alot more than first stated, the creator has now offered the laptop to consumers in western countries, for the price of $400. The extra $220 goes towards paying for another laptop for a kid in the developing world
Oh and also, the laptops aerial might be good for half a mile, but you also have to upgrade your router aerial too!!
