Iphone tethering after 1.1.1

Hey guys recently changed from verizon to att so know basics but the intricacies of this system I am not familiar with yet.

Running the iphone after 1.1.1 what is my options for tethering the edge data to the computer if need be to take advantage of traffic and other net enabled apps.
Now that I have a sim to play with in the equation it allows me to just change to accessible hardware, and would like to stay current with updates, what could be my option for popping out the sim and utilizing the edge data?

Any phones or cards (PCMCIA/express) that will accept the sim and play nice with EDGE over a tethering setup

Knowing that I could just not upgrade or just downgrade to 1.0.2, but updates will keep coming and I would like to explore alternate routs to making net access available when needed with out constantly relying on others to update and repair.

Anyone have some good ideas or methods of dealing with the problem of updates?

not sure what you mean by all this but As for tethering, are you asking how to tether?

change to accessible hardware? you mean the sim card to a different carrier?

i believe you can have EDGE as an option to a Voice Plan (AT&T) and not the other way around.

no there are numerous guides on the subject.

not a different carrier, a different device such as a different compatible phone (whether carrier unlocked or att native)that can utilize the EDGE data from the iphones data plan. ie an external computer

That is the purpose of this thread, is to explore options that will not require constant "hacking" to keep data available for other devices.

While I am sure the cat and mouse game will continue adinfinitum I really have no desire to continuously keep up with it.

I wish to find other modes of supplying data service while retaining the iphone and iphone data plan by pulling the sim and plugging it into a device that will let me use the data for times when it is needed or practical to do so.

My idea is to simply keep a iphone sim ejector pin handy where ever it may be needed and run a remote sim “bay” to whatever device I might find that will allow me to use the edge data for a carputer.

By remote sim bay I mean I can get a sim card tray (hopefully a pop in, push to pop out) and remotely mount it in the dash so it is not a larger hassle than it needs to be to swap between phone usage and computer tethering; and wire it to a device that will allow me to utilize the EDGE data service and hopefully route calls through phoneco or other compatible software.

Does this help make my query more clear?
I wish to keep the iphone in an unhacked state, but still wish to utilize the EDGE data in one form or another through a different device capable of utilizing the iphone dataplan

I'll test tomorrow if I remember (can't find a paperclip around here to pull the SIM from my iPhone) but IIRC it worked when I tried it before.

I know I've put another AT&T phone's SIM in my iPhone and made it work, I just don't recall 100% whether the iPhone SIM worked in another phone. There's no logical reason it wouldn't, but I'll check for certain as long as I remember to. I have a LG CU500 that I use for AT&T 3G data almost daily, so that will be a perfect test. If it pulls an EDGE signal with the iPhone SIM (actually, 3G should work too, it's a 3G capable SIM) all should be well. I often tether with this phone too, so I'll try that as well.

the iphone sim works in any AT&T/cingular phone

certain features like voicemail dont work right.. but you only want to use it for data... I suggest picking up a 3G phone somewhere and then you can just swap the sim cards

or alternately you can look into maybe cloning the sim and using it in your "new" 3G phone for data

Thanks, actually this post made consider it because tethering is a big deal to me. However, I do wish it was 3 G.

Okay thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead. iPhone tethering is now possible with Netshare iPhone application (I'm doing it as we speak) .

You will have to JailBreak iPhone and use Netshare application as well as a program called proxifier if using XP.

If you don't know what JailBreaking the iPhone is Google it

Currently tething with iPhone 3g and 2.01 firmware.

Okay if anyone is interested there is an even better way to tether iPhone just use the PdaNet app. Set both iPhone and PC to DHCP connect then using adhoc network launch PdaNet on iPhone that it :0

Saw this thread while doing a little scouring, but netshare has not been available since its release date to use under the legitimate “unhacked” iphone, luckily I was one of the fortunate people to get in before they pulled it the second time.

And for hacked phones I believe there are at least 3 ways to accomplish this,
1 being a illegitimate copy of netshare through cydia
2 iphone remote
3 cydia proxy

Just want to thank the guys that make this possible for the non programmer types

Your best bet is to use PdaNet much easier than Netshare as there is no need for 3rd party proxy, but you will need a jailbroken iPhone.

PdaNet can be downloaded through cydia.

Could you tether a palm pre? I know there are ways to tether these phones but would it work the same way as the iphone does?
