    Garage WiFi

    Hi All,

I'm kinda of a newbie to in car wifi. I have my carpc running for about 8 months and finally decided to add wifi to it. I am running xp with roadrunner and digital FX as my frontend.

I want to add wifi to it so I can download updates for weather and traffic before I leave the house. Also to tranfer files. I have been looking at a usb solution or a pci solution since my pc has a open pci slot. Do I need to worry about antenna placement (in the trunk with the pci card or outside with the usb). What about hiberation issues since I hiberate my PC. The router is in the room right above the garage. What may give me better reception outside the garage if i decide to park next to a starbucks? I have been looking into the linksys solutions since I have linksys equipment in the house. Any help you can give me would be great.

If your router is located such that its right above your car, you may get bad reception if both antennas (router and carpc) are both vertically polarized (vertical antenna). Most router antennas radiate strongly perpendicular to the antenna length and most weakly in the direction parallel to the antenna length. My coffee table in the living room is right below my wireless router and depending on where I put my laptop on the table, sometimes speeds can drop down to 1Mbps! So if you do infact get bad reception, you can try relocating the router, or angle the antenna of the router slightly /. For best overall reception in the car (eg. to pick up starbucks wifi), then the antenna on your carpc should be vertical, and not angled.

Thanks for the help. I can angle the antennas on the router. That should help. So you don't think it makes a difference between PCI and USB? I'm kinda leaning towards PCI. I'm still worreid about hibernation issues though.

Ive had a chinese brand USB dongle give me problems with hibernation, but if you get a brand name (like dlink), then I dont see why you would have any problems. Thats not to say you are guaranteed to not have problems with PCI either. You can go with either, but I like USB better because its conveniant to be able to plug and unplug it. Its your personal preference.
