Realistically, without actually doing it your only going to get a good guess regardless.

The one you link to has a magnetic base, as I have a spare one of those. If you were to get the magnetic base to make direct metal contact with the car youīd get the benefit of the carīs exterior as a ground-plane in addition to itīs rated/actual gain.

Currently, Iīm sporting one of these bad boys. Itīs kickinī the crap out of the little stock POS I rigged to be external to test from the back of the carpc. The linked one is hooked up to a router I put in the trunk. It gets good signals even though I have it mag mounted upside-down inside the trunk. Since itīs awesome, but an eyesore, especially on my muscle-car. This effectively cuts much of the signal it can receive and transmit, add to that since itīs in the confined area much of itīs transmitting signal is reflected back. As such, the 3db one I was looking at Iīll go with eventually. As Iīm near 100% positive itīll do better than the near 8db one I have now with it being crippled.

Itīs still a crap-shoot, but my opinion of what I know so far of your setup is unless you have a decent mount-point for that thing, youīll probably do better with a weaker gained antenna thatīs more properly placed and/or mounted.

Usually the weakest link tends to be the cable used, either improperly matched or lossy. Just use this as a guideline.

    Well,

I was looking at the one Wayne mentioned a little earlier -- it's specs say it has about 3 dbi gain. It is powered, which is one of the rubs... Its power requirements are 3 - 5.5V (which seems odd for a vehicle antenna). It does WIFI && GPS as well. Cost for it is about $115.

BTW: thanks for all the good info -- it does help.

It has no active amplifier that I can tell. The selling page is just misprinted I believe, as I see nothing for that in the manual for it.

This one however does require power for an active amplifier built-into it.

Not that big a deal for me to run 5v to it from the opus, might do that instead as itīs near 4db for the wifi range, and itīs got PCS and GPS in addition. hmmm...
