Does anyone know if it is possible to locate an internet satellite and use a dish to receive internet signals? I need to setup a system like this:
Satellite >> Receiver >> modem/transformer >> wifi transmitter >> wifi receiver in car
This system will be used for a future city ambulance fleet in Southern Asia, so I need a large range. Right now, I just want a proof-of-concept type of design to see if this is possible but I have no funds to actually purchase any large equipment until I show the actual design.
Now is such a hack possible? I know local vendors who sell wifi from large transmitters to people in the city, but I don't know where they get a connection to handle so many users. This system will only need to be used by one car right now, so load isn't much of a problem.
I will not be doing or attempting this in America as I am unaware of any laws against this.
Looking for legal alternatives. Please post any global satillite internet providers.
I do not need in-depth details, just how such a system would work. Details wouldn't help me right now until I go there.
If you are going to be using satellites for internet access without authorization, I am sure that it would be illegal wherever you are.
If this was for a business entity (such as the ambulance fleet), that business would not last very long.
I wanted to use the hack for only the demonstration. But I am, too, concerned about the legality after talking to a few people and doing some research. I was told that there may be a Chinese company that sells a receiver and provides internet for free. Anyone know if this is/could be true?
nothing in life is free. it is either a scam, or they get you to pay some other way..
You have 2 problems here...
1. assuming you get to pick the stream (not all that hard), how exactly do you plan on decoding the signal? We aren't talking about your average cable box descrabler here. You are asking how you can tap into the actual sattellite and decode that stream and essentially control it (channel switching etc). Just not happening.
2. Assuming you manage to get through 1 above, the only way you will get range beyond simplex range (and simplex in the 800+ mhz range which is what you need is pathetic), is by using repeaters. So you are going to build your own repeater network for your own sattellite decoded feed?

First, do this legally.
Second, there is a company called KVH which builds mobile satellilte systems for civilian and military applications. This includes two way communications and it is global. I would recommend that you contact them and explain what you are attempting. It won't be free, but it will be legal not only in the US, but any 'friendly' nation.
Good luck. It sounds like a fun project.
Thank you, I'll check them out. I'll take the legal option any day.

Do you have a website? The KVH website I found was only for television satellites.
