Thread: Bluetooth Widcomm software and GPS issues

It could be that the BT dongle is reserving a com port and shifting things around. When the BT software is installed, are you getting messages from the GPS unit on COM2? Open it in hyperterminal (Or any other terminal of your choice at 4800 baud and check. If you are not, then likely it's shuffling com ports around.

Thanks malcom for the response. I ran a serial port program on com2. When I open Garmin is see in the log com 2 opened by Que.exe then followed by com 2 closed. This repeats over and over. A utility that came with Garmin called GPS information when I scan the ports it returns 3 com's and on 1 & 2 no GPS receiver and on 3 no device. Under Device manager this is what is under the ports. Bluetooth comm (COM3), Communication port (COM1), MJS XM interface (COM2), and Prolific USB to Serial Comm (COM3).
Not sure what to do with this info. I guess I need to uninstall and see where everything when GPS is working.

Update:
Uninstalled bluetooth software, GPS works. Device manager shows the same as above, just the bluetooth comm is no longer there and the GPS is showing on COM3.
How do I install the bluetooth software and force a different comport or change the comports?

I'm not near a windows computer so I can't walk you through it, but in device manager, if you right click on the properties of your bluetooth COM port (or the GPS one), you should be able to change which COM port it's using. Two drivers on the same COM port would certainly cause issues, switch one to say, COM4 and try again.

I was able to Change gps to com4 and that fixed that issue. Now I have to figure why my iPhone will not pair even though the bt and phone see each other
