The new EDGE services from AT&T look pretty promising. I got a demo of the Sony-Ericsson solution (a PCMCIA card silimar to the Sierra Card from T-Mobile) and I was really impressed.
Read more about EDGE here.
The speeds are supposed to be be around 200Kbps burst and an average of around 120Kbps. It was definintely faster than using my T610 over the GPRS network via Bluetooth. The other nice thing about EDGE is that it's being offered on certain handsets as well. Here are the EDGE-compatible devices (2 Nokia handsets and a PCMCIA Card).
Might be the future!

For voice calls you could maybe do Voice over IP maybe connect to your house They don't have any decent gadgets down here in NC for mobile internet. $30 a month is a great service. Can't compare to broadband speeds but compared to dial-up it is probably a good service as you can use it anywhere!!! Sweet.
I hear that we will be seeing a big improvement in wireless modems by summer. CES Las Vegas. The edge is mearly a bridge to this new technology. Let's deal with our phone connections for a few more months.

I think they should be making this faster than 56k It seems stupid to go back to slowness after using broadband. If they could get a 1mbit connection down and .5mbit up that would be a really nice service. I would pay $40 - $50 for that.

My next generation Front End is right on schedule.
It will be done sometime in the next generation.
I'm a lesbian too.

I looked at the US version of the site and was very excitied at the prospect of a cheap wireless internet, only to go to the site for the same company (T-Mobile) here in the UK and found they were trying to charge us £50 ($90) for a piddly 50mb allowance a month plan!
I've sent an email asking why exactly the same company can charge us in the UK so much for a service the USA is receiving for a piddly £16!
Awaiting their colourful response!

Add me to the list of people using their Sprint Vision plan to access their high speed network without being "terminated". All you have to do is just take it easy on how much you browse. I easily get speeds that these Edge folks are talking about...and IT'S FREE!
Maybe you'll luck out and Vodafone will buy them out as they are up for sale right now...Originally Posted by frodobaggins
