Would wake on LAN work with a wireless adaptor? I'm assuming your car is generally close by... wouldn't it be easier to connect over wireless?Originally Posted by DKnight
In building my new system I had a thought, has anyone done a setup where you can dial your car from your home PC? I've used sprint PCS before with my laptop, but the phone was not acctually a modem so the laptop could not answer incoming calls, but if there was a phone, or software that would allow a computer to answer the incoming call I could see myself getting another phone for the car. Anyone got Ideas??

I'm thinking more along the lines of my kid has the car and I want to know where he is. So no, the car would not be near enough for wireless.
Good idea, something like if you call your PC, you get the coordinates of the car?
So this is assuming the PC is on while your kid is in the car?

If we assume the PC will on you could:
a) Write an app that transmits its position via Wi-Fi whenever it hits an open access point
b) Have the PC track where it goes for you lo browse later - Deluo make a little black box for just this purpose, you don't even need a PC
c) Have the cell phone attached as you said for dial-in - although I have no idea if it would truly act as a modem
d) A guy I work with told me his kids cell phones support a feature via the web where he can lookup their position, not sure if it is GPS or if it is reported by the cell the phone is in but it sounds pretty cool.
e) If there is a cell phone attached you could maybe send an SMS message every few minutes or whenver the tracking info reached a certain quantity, then view this elsewhere...

this is outside my realm, but im guessing you coul set up VPN to do it somehow, only i am only familiar with doing that from a mobile PC to a home PC.
as far as getting coordinates from a GPS system in a car PC, and being able to access it remotely (if im reading what u want correctly)... i have no ******* idea.
i know there are standalone system outt her that do it, they put em in bigrigs so they can make sure the drivers are running drugs on the company dime.
