two access points

hi all,

just wondering is having 2 access points (one at home and one in the car) will work together? (ie. my car pc can connect to the network at home). If this is possible, by doing thing does it increase my range? I would imagine so because AP's are more powerful than wireless cards, right?

most AP's are standalone computers with PCMCIA WiFi cards in them. The only thing that makes them "more powerful" is the antennas.

wireless network cards can be just as powerfull as AP's. The power is usually set to the maximum allowable in your region (depending on the country regulations). In Canada and US 50mw afaik. The key to extending the range of your wireless connection is a pair of good antennas. One hooked up to your AP and one to your wireless network card. A directional antenna on the AP pointed in the right direction should yield the best results. A good omni-directional antenna should be the best for the wireless card. Since the car is basically a metal box you need to position the antenna in an area that is less sheilded by metal and that will allow you best reception. Rear window works for me. Hope that helps.
