also, since it seems you are familiar with the proxim/orinoco/avaya/lucent line, as they are one and the same now, I have a question for you: I have a proxim rangelan-ds pcmcia card, and am trying to identify the antenna port on it; proxim told me it was rp-mmcx, but I bought a $30 non-returnable cable and they were wrong...I'll attach pix if you would consider helping me

Things I've learned that might be useful:

-Trees are almost PERFECT at disrupting a wifi singnal.
-Rain is almost as good (literally) depending on the direction it's flowing.
-Average house walls tend to not disrupt wi-fi as much as people make it seem.
-A small, low-gain antenna (read as inexpensive) and go a long way if the conditions are right.
-Parents don't like comming home to an 18" dish mounted on the chimney with "experiment" as an explination.

My general thought is this. If you are going to be playing with large dishes, and camps and breaking FCC regulations, then you probabaly ought not be asking for help in the forum. A book might helps more 600 yards away, line of sight, shouldn't be a problem at all. You might not even need an external antenna depending on specifics of your situation.
