There was a slashdot article a few months ago about the Defcon convention in Nevada i think it was and one of the challeneges was longest range for wifi. The winner got somthing like 11 km's using 2 usb wifi adapters a couple very large satallite dishes. At 11 km's (or whatever it was) they actually ran out of road. The signal strength was also supposed to be something comparable to two laptops with internal wifi sitting next to each other. So its all about focusing that power.

[meaning that i dont think you could do something like that in you car...]

i think i remeber seeing someone on this forum [ a police officer i believe] who attached an amplifier to his 802.11b/g adapter/antenna...and he got like really good distance

Google for cantenna, and variations ie canntenna cantena seems to be a bit of variation in the spelling. If the reports are correct there seems to be a couple of miles range in it, but mostly line of sight. So if you can find open high ground you can proberly pick up somebodys wifi leakage and surf from your car for free .
