    Netwrok issue....

I'm really out of ideas I've never quite seen anything like this before.

I've had my house wired recently for networking. Eventually my wireless router will be connected to the cable modem in the basement for one computer on the first floor and two computers in the basement. Up on the 2nd floor we have a hub for 3 computers the hub is wired into the router.

At the moment the cable modem is plugged directly into the hub upstairs. Now I'm having a strange problem with the computers up there. All three computers are hooked into the hub. One computer (my fathers) can read the hub and internet connection just fine. Now my other two computers can't read the internet connection or my fathers computer. But for some strange reason the two computers that can't read the internet or my fathers computers are seeing each other on the network. I really can't figure out why they are doing this.

The very strange thing is that if you look at properties of the network cards on the two computers not readining internet they are both receieving like large amounts of packets but not sending any out. I don't understand it at all.

My ISP will only allow 1 compter (or router) to connect to their server. A hub does not assign 1 IP for all net traffic to the outside, it just tries to pass the data on. If you put your router where your hub is and follow your ISP's instructions for switching to that deviice, I bet everything will work. Then when you get everything sorted out, you can use the hub downstream of the router.

    Iamthehor is right.

You cannot just use the hub as a splitter for your cable connection.

You must use a router that can get the internet connection from your ISP, then redirect packets to each computer in your house that will be assigned a IP from the router.

The hub can be used later on to provide more connections but a switch is much faster and has more bandwidth.

Yeah, although I find it odd that your cable modem does not function as a router. Possibly a bridge? My service uses a bridge, and i dont have a router, so I just hooked the connection upto a switch. Now all of my computers have different IP's...from the OUTSIDE of the network. Pretty cool, until they found at that I had 4 IP's and got all ****ed off at me. They really should have set up their network to prevent me from doing this.
    Bahaha. Netwrok.

Most cable modems are not routers, just a connection gateway. You need to connect it to a router which will serve dhcp to all the computers on the network. Once you have that setup, it will function as one IP to the outside world, but as many (255) internal network addresses as you need. The only cable modems that have built in routers are typically the 2wire ones, with built in wifi and 10/100. You should be able to connect all sorts of switches/hubs to the network, as long as the first point after the cable modem is a dhcp host.
