Don't bother with the dns updater. Use a reverse connecting trojan. The server runs on your carputer. The client runs on some other machine. When your car connects to the internet, it will automatically connect to the client. It will give you the ip, as well as full control of your carputer. So if you have a GPS, you'll be able to connect and find out where your car is. If you have a reverse cam, you should be able to pick some details up,street signs or something. You can even listen to a microphone if you have one installed. Trojans nowdays are called RAT's (remote assistance tools) Remember, these things can be used for lagitamate purposes too. If anyone wants to play with these, let me know and I can provide links to forums, software, and I will be more than happy to pass on my knowledge. Youll still need to use no-ip but it will be on your home computer not your carputer. So since it doesnt have to update anything when it's suddenly in range, it will connnect to your home much quicker than having to update its own ip.

Sounds like the way I'd do it.

However I wouldn't call it a Trojan - by definition that's something that's masquerading as something else (and hence generally is a bad thing since why would it hide what it is?).

I know here in the US you can buy cell phones (Wal-mart or almost anywhere) and you buy air time minutes. You don't pay for any monthly fees for these cheap one time buy phones. Wouldn't it be easier to just buy one with about 3 hrs and hook it up in the car to the computer and forget about it. That way when and if your car gets stolen you can just call your car (modem-to-modem) and then you can track it anywhere by it feeding you all the gps info. Just a thought..

Why bother with the PC, windows, finding net connection, etc these are not very reliable piece of security kit. Go for the raw hardware solutions.

If the PC can be guaranteed to be on, then sending & receiving SMS messages seems to be easy enough. I did it using hyper terminal manually but it could easily be automated. Making the PC use the phone as a modern can also be automated. So you send it an SMS to trigger it to connect via the same phone and send GPS coordinates to a web site somewhere. Or even a stream of coordinates.

actually, what chris linked to should be able to work even if the comp is off. just hook one of the triggers up to the power on switch and make it a momentary pulse. send the command via SMS and voila! remot controlled computer
