    VZW's EVDO Capabilities.. DAMN

WOW.. How unlucky am I.. I am in the greater Los Angeles area, and nice to know, that EVDO is offered to me and IS available. Next thing I hear from a Verizon Rep. is that my phone is NOT capable of EV-DO!! There are only three phones that ARE capables, 2 audiovox's, and the VX 8000, which all came out today!! Well, I guess I'll wait until June to get a new phone, if I want one then. I'm really happy w/ the 710 though, so I'll just have to see how it goes. ARGHH!! Frustrating.. One thing my phone IS NOT capable of..

Lol. There are a lot of things the V710 isn't capable of. All the phones that use EVDO now, Audiovox XV6600, Audiovox 8940, Samsung A890, and the LG VX8000. They are all really good phones, and the broadband EVDO connection is the top of the line in cellular communications right now. The XV6600 is a PDA phone, and one of the highest rated ones on the market. They should all be available tomorrow, on the public release of EVDO.
At least you live in an EVDO market, I won't be seeing it for another 6 months to a year, verizon doesn't have enough spectrum in the bay area and northern california markets.

Wait for the new Motorola E815 it will replace the V710 and include EVDO capability with Bluetooth.

Well, actually, there is a way around it by upgrading your own firmware with a new version that verizon doesn't authorize/know about. It's called the .SD version. It has bluetooth transfer capabilities, etc.

I'll also have to look at the 815.. Looks interesting!

Yeah, but good luck getting them to help you with any problems with your phone if you upgrade the firmware.

I hate it when companies lock you out of the products full capabilities.

Well, I don't have any problems on the forum.. Plus, any problems I do have, I just ask on hofo. I turne din my phone to VZW w/ SD firmware on it, and the guy was confused, but he didn't care and just took the phone back.. lol..

Cool, more power to you. I hacked my Motorola T720C back in the day to let me put ringtones from Xringer (Usually $1.50 a piece) and wallpaper ($1.00 a piece). I just think it would have been nicer if I could have just started up Mobile Phone Tools and just gone straight to the Multimedia Studio to put ringotnes and stuff on it, just like I was able to on my V300-V551.

    Peace,

Pardon my igborance, but what exactly is EDVO. I searched google and wasn't able to find any decent results explaining the technology. I am guessing it is something like UMTS in Europe enabling high speed data connections for cell phones with the downside that bandwidth is shared with all UMTS users in a 1kmē cell. Unlike WiMAX
Lilliput 7" TS TFT, ASRock K7VM2, Duron 1,3 GHz, 512 MB DDR RAM, 30 GB Seagate HDD @ 5.400 rpm, WLAN w/ 500mW booster, Toshiba Slimline DVD-ROM Drive, D-Link USB Radio

Download the German Voicepack 1.0 for FreeDrive now!

1xEVDO is the next network based on Qualcomm's CDMA technology. EVDO is short for "Evolution Data Only" and as the name states is a data *only* network. It's burstable to 2.5 Mbps but the speeds I'm seeing are no where near that... Yes, they are limited to the speed of the cell site.. but at this point there are so few people with capable phones/pc cards I think they're capping people's upload/download speeds. I found a setting through the service menu in my VX8000 that actually said "max evdo throughput" and the highest it would go was 256kbps.. it was set at 32kbps... But after changing it, I didn't find that the streaming video (which uses the evdo network) was any faster than before.

    There's my two cents.
