what about your router?
Hello All,
I just purchased a newer version WUB11 that uses the MMCX connector. My current singal strength is 10-15% and sometimes the signals just drop. My router is about 100ft away, so I really need to boost the signal.
How do I go about doing this? Is there some kind of backwards plug to connect the MMCX to a satellite dish?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

this will give you some details about the antenna hack. you need to identify which version you have to add an external antenna to the unit.
I'm starting to eye this unit personally now. add a 1W booster, and that would make it an excellent wardriving setup:-)

What is a 1W booster ?
it takes your existing signal (which is 15mw with the WUSB11) and boost it to 1000mw (or 1W) benefit is you can detect farther access points, but negative is that it may not be able to connect to them to use them for internet.
legal wardriving is just detection of points, so i can care less about connectiong to a access point for net. I turn my TCP/IP off to make sure i don't connect.

You know guys I hear and see a lot about how people turn off the TCP/IP stack to prevent connecting. Im assuming this means it's ILLEGAL to connect to someones wireless network? Even open ones? Does anyone know of a penal code or other code for this so I could look it up??? -BW
I've seen a whole lot of posts by people saying it's illegal but no real evidence. Someone even tried to use the example of some kids that got arrested for sitting on an unprotected company wireless network after injecting a program to get credit card details off of it as an example of it being illegal to simply use an unprotected wireless network.
But, regardless of the actual legality (although I'd love to know), unless you sit on someone's doorstep and they call the police after seeing you loitering repeatedly for long lengths of time, how would anyone catch you. If you simply drive by and send/receive an email or two whilst parked at a traffic light, who would care. let alone somehow catch you...

True... I'm not saying I haven't done it once or twice in the past - but i see it like you do. Who will know immediately or care? Even then - could they catch you fast enough? Probably not. I named my system TruckPC - so it's kinda obvious but nothin about me. (Unless they see the truck with the antennas lol) Yeah Id like to see what law that'd fall under. -BW
PS: Maybe this discussion should be moved? Dont want to hijack a thread!Maybe in a different topic it will get more replies too....

yes, it is complete ILLEGAL by FEDERAL law to connect to someone's network without their permission, wirelessly or wired. it is exactly the same as breaking into their computer or network like a script kiddy or a hacker from the Internet. either way it is hard to trace, but you place the rest of us legally wardriving AT RISK by doing stupid stuff such as connecting to an open A/P.
wardriving's STRICT code of ethics is:
* Don't look beyond the detection.
* Don't touch beyond the detection.
* Don't play through the A/P.
turning off TCP/IP makes sure to prevent *any* sort of connection by mistake and keeps it as a pure "tracking" of wireless device spread
read up on this FAQ before doing anything stupid and make all wardrivers look bad:

if you want legal, mobile internet, invest in a celluar broadband card or a mobile office kit from your celluar wireless provider.
