Cingular GPRS / EDGE + PC Card ????

I live in the middle of noware - but I live near a major highway
and the cell towers follow it - I live 3 miles from a cell tower that
from what I have been told has Cingular's GPRS, EDGE service
on it, I live in a wooded area and there are no hills, I called Cingular
and asked about the service , they sell you a $150 PC card,
charge you $36 setup fee, and $80 for Unlimited use and its
    a 2 year contract,and 30 days to get a refund, I cant get DSL,
and I have Direcway now and it sucks - Ping times are about
2 seconds, you only get 150mb every 4 hours, or they kill you
connection or drop it to sub modem speed, on top of that it
sometimes dies or gets real slow, and sometimes it takes 30 seconds
    to load the google page

I hate Direcway and wish they would burn in hell
sadly its better than dial up but only by a hair

I need something that works and is fast - I do download a lot,
as much as I can in fact , newsgroups, linux ISOs stuff like that
and some times use Shareaza - on Shareaza it takes a week
to download any thing and edonkey wont work at all on Direcway,
Kazaa used to work good but Direcway could not block port 80
as its used for web pages - its seams that they block or limit
    most P2P traffic

I will be using it at home only - I would love to use it in my car
but my dad needs to use the internet also - or is there a way
to use 2 cards on one account - not at the same time tho

What I want to know is what ports/programs can you use on it
how much will they allow you to download , user reviews,
extra charges, what about roaming , ect ect

I would like to use it like DSL or Cable and leave it on all the time
and even share it over a lan - any ideas thoughts

I live in Arkansas so I am lucky to have phone and running water

I use the Sony GC83 GPRS/EDGE card and it works pretty well in the car. IT looks like Cingulars unlimited plan it $24 a month. I have an employee plan with unlimited so I'm not sure the difference in price. If you sign up for the ulimited plan I don't think there is anything extra (Though I wouldn't know because of the employee plan...)

I used it in Devalls Bluff, AR and I got about 10K a sec, with 2 bars.

I haven't tried it with any edonkey style programs but Bittorrents worked fine. You can also get an external antenna for it which would make your connection that much better.

It looks like you have to buy the Sony Ericsson GC83
I looked on google for Cingular's GPRS, EDGE service
and found very little - but using "Sony Ericsson GC83 Cingular"
found lots - seams like a good card and you can use a external
attena with it - thats a must for me

And from what I have seen you can share it over a lan

I am going to keep looking on google

did you try to get Cable? Maybe you have someting there. Call up th local cable company and ask. You may be lucky. I have the chance for both, and i highly recommend Cable. It's a bit pricier, but it's cheaper than you're wireless solution. There are some cable companies, that do go out to you even if it's not covered yet... Good luck...

nope this is the middle of noware 30 miles from the 2 nearest big cities

the sad thing is if I lived 3 miles closer to the cell tower I could
get DSL or cable, the cell tower is in a small town - but they
will not run ether out here - Its ether Satellite internet that blows
    or this

    LOL

If I was very good friends with someone in that small town
and had lots of $$$ I could set up two 100+ foot towers with
802.11 and a Directional Antennas - not going to happen

    but that would be cool

I called Wireless Data tech support to ask about what ports were open
how much can I download and stuff like that

I kept saying ports like port 80 for HTTP and port 110 for email
and port 21 for FTP and port 119 for news groups, he kept
saying USB ports ?? - and I would say no TCPIP ports and he would
    say USB?? - LOL

Then I asked about how much I can download and he said he
had herd a few peeps had ben cut off temporarily for
downloading hela lots but it does not happen very often

He said the only way to find out is to try it - I guess I will

I will report back, ports , speed, amount I can download
ect ect, Like a review - I will test in my car a little also

The $24/unlimited data plan is intended to be for data through your phone only. You can get this plan, buy a GC82 or GC83 off Ebay (the only difference is support for 800MHz which is not used in the U.S.), plug your SIM into the GC8X, and use that. I do that and it works well.

Now the caveats. First, some of the cards on Ebay are locked to AT&T, and even after a f/w upgrade they still won't work on the Cingular network. They will work with an AT&T SIM, but you can't buy them anymore. I bought a GC82 a few months back for $20 though and it works like a champ.

Second, on this plan you have to go through Cingular's WAP Internet site, so there are a few restrictions (no VPN) but pretty much everything works. Supposedly there are no download accelerators on the backend through the WAP interface to help speed things up. There were a few rumors on www.howardforums.com of a few people using lots of data that got pinged, but many others reported daily usage of 50MB or more with no trouble.

If you want the full-bore plan it's $80/month but then you are free to use all that you want. VPN works too.

I recently picked up a Wilson adapter cable and mini-mag mount antenna for use with the card. I intend to use them with my carputer when it's ready to go.

Oh, some folks added a phone to their plan under the family plan, then use that SIM only for data. I did that, now I have a dedicated SIM to use with the GC82 instead of taking it out of my cell phone all the time.

    Good luck,
    Z

Can you give a little more info on the Mag mount and adapter? Do you have links and how much was it?
