    Thumbs up Wireless USB option

I have 1 of these in my house and my neighbor uses one to conect to my network. I live in a duplex/Apartment. He has to go through 3 walls. one being an exterior wall. and he gets excellent connection. at the same time the one in my house is going through 3-4 walls through bathrooms and all that and it gets excellent connection. here is how i know that it does REALLY well.my DlinkDWL-G650 (PCMCIA card) in the same area right next to the USB adapters gets good connection. so in my opinion these things are AWSOME!
it comes in 3 flavors also
    802.11b
    802.11g
and 802.11g with the speed boost

just thought i would let you guys know.. these may work VERY well for this type of application in a car setting.

oh ya.. it runs on USB only
no power adapter needed, just has to have a powered USB port =D

USB = the sucks for networking. Period. I don't care what the application, it is a joke. pure joke.

keep it for cameras and slow data transfer. now that i've ranted, this sounds pretty cool. since it takes power from the usb directly it can save some hassle. thanks for sharing and yeah, usb still blows when it comes to networking.

ya, optimal is more important then port... if it works well in usb, then sweet, if pcmcia or 10/100... even better, but if it works, it works!

Shauns, I'm with ya man... I personally have a pcmcia that I kife from my laptop when I need it, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution for my computer, and might be doing something like that cause you can rip them apart and stuff... I'm looking to try to mount a better antenna some place. Have you tried it in your car? My pcmcia is pretty weak.. I get < 100 feet from my base station through one wall and it goes low enough that it looses connection alot. Us NOOOBS get no respect!!

    Glad to be of service.

And if you'd done any in-depth reading on the forum regarding wireless adapters, you'd know that there's a number of them in use in various projects.
One of the nice things about the Linksys units is that the stock antenna can be removed, and another, higher-gain antenna can be used in its place, giving your little blue/black box more range.

One thing that sucks about them is the plastic can warp from too much heat. You can remove the innards of the unit and suffer no ill effects.

You're not presenting anything that's newsworthy to anyone here... At least anyone who chooses to read what people are doing and the ups/downs of various projects. For that reason, you get sarcasm & smart-*** remarks. I will not call you a n00b, as I see you've at least been a member for 6 months. Although your statements are decidedly noobish, like it or otherwise.

odd. pcmcia should be hassle free since the card itself is ethernet. for pcmcia to be malfunctioning it would be the equivalent of a pci slot going south.

Just thought i would share my experience with the WUSB54G.

I bought one partly because of the recommendation in this thread, and because i found it on sale at pc world. But i have to say i am hugely disappointed with it.

Using it in my car, parked in the driveway, i have only been able to a get a low signal at best (usually very low), with a connection speed of 1mbps. I even tried sitting it on the roof of the car but it made no difference, and it is really not that far from where the access point is.

Then i tried it inside right next to the access point (Linksys WAP54G) and although i got an excellent signal i still couldnt get the connection speed to go more than 1mbps. sometimes it would go to 54 for a second then back to1.

I realised just how poor the performance when i tried my cousins MSI wireless card. As soon as i plugged it in (inthe car) i got a good signal with a speed of 11mbps. ( it is 802.11b)

So now i have ranted, i plan to sell the linksys adaptor and find a decent 802.11g card adaptor. Any recommendations?

Is your laptop USB 2.0 compatible?

If not, that could be the problem also.

    Peace,

I've posted this before on other threads but my PCI wireless card causes the Epia M10000 to "skip" every 5 or 6 minutes when playing mp3's. It pegs the cpu for a split second, then everything goes back to normal for another 5-6 minutes.

How do I know? Because when I remove the PCI card, it doesn't happen. Others have reported similar experiences.

As someone suggested, it could be drivers, but I haven't gotten around to checking for new ones.
