WiFi car proximity networking

Yo.

After installing my car computer, I started thinking about some entrepreneurial ideas, and figured you guys had already thought of them, and will just ask what progess has been made so far.

So we all know about wifi cruising to pick up net connections...

but if I plug a wireless router into my carputer, then it should be possible with the right programming to set up carputer proximity networks.

The connection program would continually ping the 192.168.0.1-10 ip addresses to see if anyone has connected, then if this person has my program installed, then some port will allow the connection, and then voila!

Is there some technology that does this without needing to install my hypothetical connection program?

Lets discuss.

eh..?

You lost me there... actually if something is in range all you need is a broadcast and receive point. AKA a router and a card and the connection itself should be established..

why would you need to ping anything constantly?

I have a card in mine so whenever i approach the driveway it picks up the devices in the house and i can do updates right there. No need to take the pc out or wait for the sub 28.8 gprs to kick in...

I think he means just a router for other carputers to connect to (or laptops, or whatever is in the area)

well I don't see why you would want to do the pinging and/or detection, if it's just for security, use standard wireless security crap... if anyone's bored enough to crack your WEP key just to get on a network that doesn't do them any good, then I say let them go for it

if you don't use security, then the router will just hand them an IP and they will be connected automatically... so either way, depending on what you are trying to accomplish...

right, so I won't use any security. I mean, i think we're not far in the future enough to have carputer hackers. i hope.

so once i have the connection up, then i suppose that will be enough to run your average P2P chat program. Either way, i need to know the IP of the people who have joined my network,

and if I write a program to continutally scan for the typical DHCP IP addresses, then if that person has a program of mine, i will be able to connect on the correct port, etc. etc.

Then i will sell carputers with my program to familys with multiple cars that want to video conference while they drive, or something silly like that.

actually i wouldnt write something that already exists. thats where the entrepreneurial part comes in.

What in the world are you trying to accomplish?

If you want to b e able to take a car and park it somewhere where people can connect to it - try trillian. You'll need to buy a site license. They offer a serverless chat protocol.

If you want to have the multiple car video conference thing, you'll need to create a program or buy a sitelicense for it.

When the client truns on have it conenct to the server - and send a packet to the server teling the server its there. Much more resource svaving than scanning the entwork for on of the clients,
